Best Ways to Get to the Airport
  • 28X Bus: This is a Port Authority city bus that goes straight from Carnegie Mellon to Pittsburgh International Airport, and vice versa. It makes a few stops, bringing the total travel time to about an hour, but the first and last stops are always either CMU or the airport. Because this is a city bus, it is free with a student ID.
  • A taxi cab only takes about half an hour, but a cab can cost anywhere from $35 to $50. It's really only worth it if you have a lot of luggage or you are splitting the cab with one or two other people.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The most popular method of transportation at CMU is definitely public transportation. The Port Authority has a lot of bus routes that pass campus every five or 10 minutes, so it's not hard to find a bus, although students often complain that the right bus always seems to elude them when they're looking for it. The buses span all of the major neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, and the Port Authority also operates the T, which is basically like a metro system. Most students only use this if they need to get out into the neighborhoods like South Hills, Mount Lebanon, and Bethel Park—they all surround the central areas of Pittsburgh.

Students who live off campus frequently use bikes to get to their classes, as there are plenty of places to stow a bike near the academic and recreational buildings. If you choose to bring a bike, you also have to invest in a really secure bike lock because thefts are not uncommon. A fair amount of students have cars, but they have to pay exorbitant fees for permits (although these students usually can afford it). At the end of the day, most CMU students simply rely on their own two feet to get them places, because most areas of interest are within a reasonable walking distance.

Bus System

The buses at CMU are free with your ID card. The buses are great, except for the fact that they can be unreliable on showing up on time. I've gotten stranded at night because a bus never came: it's important to know when they stop running on certain days. They could be way more convenient, but it's nice to have them at all, especially since they're free, but they could be a lot better.

Getting Around Pittsburgh

CMU makes sure to provide fantastic opportunities for getting around Pittsburgh. CMU ID cards double as bus passes for a fee included in tuition. The buses go to all the nearby neighborhoods (Oakland, Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, The Waterfront, Downtown, The Strip District) and to farther destinations like the Pittsburgh Airport and nearby towns. CMU also has a shuttle service to bring students to nearby popular apartments and grocery stores on a very regular schedule. The only downsides are that occasionally the Pittsburgh bus system can be behind or unreliable, but not as often as people like to complain.

Facts

Local Taxi Services

You can request Yellow Cab via phone [(412) 321-8100], online, or an iPhone app, but the best way to guarantee that they'll come is to schedule one a few hours ahead if you know you will need it. Otherwise, you usually have to wait far longer than you would like. Classy Cab is a mix between a town car/limo service and a regular taxi service [(412) 322-5080]. They are higher priced, but their cars are larger and, well, classier looking. They tend to be more reliable time-wise, as well—although it is still a good idea to book in advance.

Did You Know? Pittsburgh Port Authority buses are "free" to Carnegie Mellon students—as in your tuition pays for it. All you have to do is flash a CMU ID to the bus driver.
