The academic quality of Case is usually the selling point for most prospective students. Once you’re a student at Case, the professors here go out of their way to involve talented and hard-working students with special opportunities. The contentment among students regarding the decentralized nature of the humanities and science departments is another story. There’s no denying that Case’s reputation is asymmetrically publicized in the science, engineering and business areas. The notable strength of the humanities departments unfortunately remains in the shadow of the fame and publicity of the science, engineering and business fields.

Case is a unique research institution, because unlike many other prestigious institutions, research is not limited to graduate students and PhD’s. Perhaps due to the research-driven atmosphere, many professors at Case embrace challenging innovations and new experiences—much like the students. Case professors expect their students to work hard, but they aren’t inflexible. All professors seemingly strive to create a dynamic environment conducive to learning; some are notably more successful than others. It’s easy to become pessimistic about professors after a bad experience; after all, you do have to spend an entire semester to a year with them, but those tend to be few and far between. Professors are a very important part of the college experience and students put forth the academic effort, they will thrive in Case’s learning environment.

Challenging but Possible

I chose Case Western Reserve University because of its strong reputation in science and engineering, its cognitive science program, and its availability of research for undergraduate students. The workload is very challenging, it's a lot of work, but it's do-able. Most teachers, supplemental instructors, and student tutors are available to help with any unclear material.

Pre-Med at Case

Being a pre-medical student at Case is an amazing opportunity because there are so many other individuals who also intend to go to medical school. The atmosphere is conducive to this type of learning. The opportunities are abundant, from volunteering at UH to getting involved in some sort of pre-medical organization, to doing medical research with faculty on the Case campus.
