Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

As on most campuses, food is one of two topics diligently assailed by the student body, the other being the weather—the weather being almost as unpredictable as the food. The food on campus is typical institutional-quality fare—not unbearable, just not quite appetizing. To their credit, the food service staff makes an effort to accommodate students’ dining requests. For vegetarians, the options are fair. For vegans, it would be in your best interest to opt for the 10 meal-per week plan and come equipped with some cooking gear and use your CaseCash Points (1 point = 1 dollar) at the Co-op on campus that offers a variety of vegetarian and vegan grocery options. In addition, the West Side Market is 30-40 minutes by train or bus and is an indoor/outdoor market that sells retail and wholesale fresh vegetables, grains and meats.

I have hosted several prospective students and many have gone as far to say that the food here is ‘pretty good.’ For those readers whose college visits have offered them the privilege of sampling college food, ‘pretty good’ means a great deal. Pretty good, by most students’ standards tends to mean that there is edible food that is appetizing if you’re hungry or need something to keep you awake for a few more hours. Students can always count on pizza, pasta, burgers, fries, and salad and dessert bars. Quality, taste and variety, however, are not as reliable. Campus dining offers enough variety to keep you coming back, but it still leaves you with a reason to eat out or make your own meal at least a few times each week.

The freshman dining hall on campus is hit or miss. They focus a lot on sustainability and locally grown food, and there usually is something for everyone. The other dining hall on campus has a little more variety, but also focuses on local food and sustainability. For those late night cravings, L3 offers burgers and pizza that are part of the meal plan, and there is an "all-nighter" (that is in no way open all night) Denny's across the street from the freshman dorms that takes meal swipes, Case cash, cash, or credit. Considering how much you pay for the meal plan, you get ripped off at the dining hall, but after freshman year you can choose a smaller meal plan.

Mediocre

The campus food is really not that good. It is good for the first week of classes and then it takes a turn for the worse and just stays at mediocre. The really only good days are when there are open houses coming through. For some reason the food provider, Bon Apetit, wants to have fresh food from local farms. This in theory sounds like a good idea, however they obviously don't understand that Case is in Cleveland and that fruit in December should not be from local farms...

Getting Better

The on-campus dining options have been improving in the years before I was there and while I was there. Fribley on the south side of campus is rather good (try the turkey burgers) and Leutner on the north side was recently renovated. Food options at the Tomlinson Cafe on the main quad have also improved. The Silver Spartan has become a Denny's. There's a cafe in the library now too.

On the downside, Grab-it remains mediocre (go to Fribley for lunch if you have time, or Tomlinson if you can afford it) and there are few options (no meal swipe options) on the Mather quad. Hours at the dining halls have also been reduced and they can be crowded at peak time.

Meal plans are also very expensive. Once you get off the meal plan and can cook your own food, you can easily save a couple thousand dollars a year.

Special Options Students can opt out of the meal plan with a written request and reason. If you do so, it’s probably a good idea to have access to a decent kitchen—one more expansive than the kitchens in Clarke Tower, for instance. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself ordering out quite a lot.
Did You Know? Arabica, the local coffee shop, is one of the most popular places for students to hang out. Musicians who feel confident enough can ask the proprietor to have equipent set up for them to play in the evenings, or can try to join in when another musician or band is currently playing.
