Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Aside from the alcohol present at many parties, there is virtually no drug “scene.” Although there are pockets of students who dabble in illegal substances, marijuana is basically the extent of illicit substance use on campus. Most reprimanding is with regard to alcohol, but there is virtually never any need for the reprimanding of other substances for lack of their presence. With drugs and alcohol, students are fairly responsible and those motivated enough to obtain substances and go to the trouble of maintaining secrecy, usually do so in a discreet and fairly responsible fashion.

As with most things in life, if you really want them, you’ll find a way. The academic rigor in combination with its predominant conservativism and general geekiness makes for an environment where there is little place for substances other than the occasional keg or 12-pack. By and large, there is no pressure on campus, and illegal substances pose no threat.

"Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

Students obviously drink regularly on weekends, and it is not difficult to pick out the potheads starting week one. But it really seems like the RAs don't care enough to actually monitor anything. Parties get "busted" by campus and Cleveland police every weekend, but no action is ever taken against those involved. Drug use is "controlled" but by no means "prohibited."

Drinking Is Just an Option

If you want to drink on the weekends, there are places to go, but there is no pressure to drink, even if you go to parties with alcohol. Pot is relatively common but it is hidden well. For both alcohol and drugs, there are places to get it but it is not everywhere.
