College Prowler Take

Students note other academic institutions playing a minor role in the local atmosphere, but students tend to venture most often to Coventry, the traditional local college town and to other local hubs of entertainment in the city (the Flats club district). The local atmosphere on and around campus varies depending upon which direction you go, and dramatically so. Students usually see the less wealthy neighborhoods as highly dangerous and rumors are abundant regarding the bad things that can happen once you “set foot past” certain streets. The ‘better’ areas literally border these neighborhoods; the contrast of local atmospheres is remarkable.

The campus itself and the outlying areas are jammed with cultural institutions. Northeast of campus is not a very safe place and there are not many student attractions located there. Southeast of campus are wealthier neighborhoods of Cleveland Heights, Little Italy and Coventry. If you travel 20 or so minutes West, you hit downtown Cleveland, more museums, arenas, shopping and dining. Southwest for about thirty minutes takes you to Cuyahoga National Park and plenty of outdoors possibility. North is the lake, the beach and more outdoors fun possibility, though, it is not advisable to swim in the lake due to high coliform count warnings during most of the year. In the warmer months free festivals and concerts abound. In general, not all activities and attractions in Cleveland are easily accessible, but if students devote a little effort to exploring the city, they won’t be disappointed.

Cleveland Is Average

B-

Cleveland is ok... Case happens to be in the sketchy part of town and everything around it seems to close by 10 pm-midnight which sucks for the students, but there are nice museums and a lot to do downtown if you make the effort to go. Shopping is good, westside market is AWESOME, but the public transportation is kind of a pain... the healthline will be your best friend. Also the weather sucks during the winter so you really have to force yourself to go out.

Fun Can Be Found, but Students Are Often Apathetic

B-

There is potentially a lot of things to do on or around campus. Sure you may need to be 21 to enjoy the nightlife and such, but there are always a lot of museums around. Plus there is coventry and little Italy, both fun places to hang around. But what really makes these places more fun is when you are with a group, and sometimes the kids at case are a little locked up in their room. Not to say that they aren't fun kids, but it is full of a lot of nerdy career oriented people that need to kick back once in awhile. Usually there is something going on around campus, but as usual, it is more fun with friends. I come from the viewpoint that I can see case as a school where is seems hard to have fun, but with a little bit of creativity you can always find something to do, if not your homework

The Atmosphere Is What You Make It.

A-

it's easy to trap yourself in your dorm and never seen anything outside of Case's boundaries, but there's actually a lot to do. Little Italy is always beautiful, especially the tables by the window's at Presti's. The RTA offers easy transportation to Indians games, Cavs games and the House of Blues. There's tons going on, just be warry of public transportation schedules and not getting stranded somewhere in Cleveland late at night.

Strange Part of Cleveland

B+

Case is situated in a strange part of Cleveland. The north side is close to a dangerous part of Cleveland, where I feel less safe and can find little to do. The south side, however, is located next to Cleveland Heights, Coventry Village, and Little Italy. These are all much nicer areas of town with restaurants, places to show, and some fun and interesting cultural events (such as the Feast of the Assumption in Little Italy). As long as you live on that side, you'll find a lot to do.

The area surrounding the campus...

The area surrounding the campus varies depending on the direction you go. Coventry Village and the Cedar-Fairmount are lively areas with good food and entertainment, as well as a pleasant residential section. There are some run-down areas around campus, but these can be avoided. Cleveland itself is a relatively clean city, although it is surrounded by many plants and factories.
