In general, students have found off-campus housing to be relatively inexpensive and convenient. Of the 3,457 undergraduates at Case, about 950 live off campus (150 in University-owned apartments). All will agree that it's not the options that are the trouble, it's the housing contract. According to the housing contract, housing off campus is not permitted until one's senior year without special circumstances, which some students find easy to come up with. Planning ahead by searching for deals and speaking with landlords is necessary if your off-housing campus experience is going to be worth the move off campus.
There are many close, convenient, inexpensive, off-campus housing possibilities, many of which in the Cleveland Heights historical district can be luxurious and less expensive alternatives to campus housing if the rent is shared by roommates. Living on campus in a dorm is a big part of the college experience. Most have had their fill by their senior year, but some can't part with the unique residence hall atmosphere. The costs and benefits are not as clear cut as the math makes them seem they are; certain students have the characteristics of an individual who needs the privacy and independence of off-campus housing whereas others thrive in the communal atmosphere of the residence hall.
