Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most would advise to not even bother. Though, the distance between residential villages and classrooms (up to a 20-minute hike, depending on where you live and where you are going) makes having a car seem awfully enticing. Parking permits are astronomically expensive and parking without a permit is often unsafe, iffy, and a major hassle. Freshmen are strongly advised not to bring cars as upperclassmen have priority as of course do faculty. Obtaining a parking pass is not difficult if you plan far in advance and perhaps open a savings account for its purchase in the future.

Unless you commute or make very often trips home on the weekends, public transportation and campus shuttles can take care of most of your needs and most essential shopping can be done very close to campus or within reasonable distance using the RTA.

Parking Is Horrible

Parking is horrible on campus. The options are very limited and parking passes are way too expensive. The upside is that public transportation is excellent and students get free passes.

Not That Great

Parking isn't amazing cause it's hard to find a spot and you need permits to park in many of the nearby lots. But if you don't mind walking a couple of minutes extra then there's other lots that have free parking and are usually pretty empty :)

Getting a Parking Permit

The parking permit situation is atrocious. Permits are offered on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to upperclassmen. Furthermore, permits are very expensive, and waiting lists and run-arounds tend to be common.

Did You Know? Don't slack off on paying parking tickets! If you accumulate too many unpaid tickets, University Circle cops will put a bright orange lock on your wheel, rendering the car impossible to drive until you pay off the tickets.
