Transportation

Quick Stats

Best Ways to Get to the Airport
  • A cab ride to the airport costs $25–$30
  • RTA Bus: Redline 66X (westbound)
  • RTA Rapid: Redline (westbound)

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Using public transportation is very convenient for those patient enough to wait in the cold, but most students carpool for shopping trips. The reliability of the buses is sketchier than that of the Rapid on weekends, but during the week, both are very reliable. The RTA is usually necessary to get to and from the airport in an efficient manner. The trip to the airport on the Rapid is very short, requires no changing of lines and is only about 45 minutes.

Public transportation in major metropolitan areas must remain efficient for the city to remain functional and students, although most are not commuters, the RTA is utilized by students mostly to get downtown to the club district, to sprawl areas with Wal-Mart, Borders, and Cineplexes, and to get to and from the airport. Fares are entirely taken care of with your RTA pass during the school year. Learning the routes, lines, colors, stops, and locations is an entirely other story and may take quite some time, especially if you use only one route (to Walmart usually, and only once or twice a month). RTA staff is usually very friendly and will answer your questions. A few tries and a bit of studying of the routes will provide great freedom if your intent is to venture out of the campus bubble.

Always gets me where I need to go. No need for a car (parking is tough).

The Bus System Is Decent

During the weekdays and weekend nights, the campus buses are fairly reliable. However, the tracking system will be very off every once in a while, and buses are hard to get on Saturday and Sunday mornings/afternoons. Citywide transportation is either right on time, or terribly late and unreliable. There isn't really any in-between there. However, housing fees cover the cost of taking all of these buses, and taking the campus buses is free for anyone, which is nice.

Good for Certain Things

The only reason this is a B is because the RTA has such good service for a city of Cleveland's size. Getting downtown, to the airport, or to shopping areas from campus on the bus or train is really easy. Several bus lines and a rail line run through campus. Students get a transit pass for $25 per semester.

The campus bus system is awful. It runs on inconsistent, infrequent schedules. It's usually faster to walk. The loops seem to be all left turns, so the buses get stuck waiting at lights a lot, then the drivers deviate from their routes to make up time. The online tracking system is uselessly inaccurate.

Greyhound in Cleveland is awful. They're always late and the station is run-down with inadequate seating. Megabus is better, but they have limited options and their prices have gone up a lot.
