Catholic University is all over the place in terms of athletics. On one hand, the facilities are adequate, if not accommodating, with plenty of opportunities for students to work out and expand their sporty horizons. Most students have favorable opinions about the fitness center and Duf. As far as athletic performance, the University has a modest, sometimes promising record. Many of the underrated sports—such as rowing, rugby, and cross country—have exceeded expectations and maintained impressive records.

But what is most telling of all at CUA is the team spirit, or lack thereof. Students rarely show up to support the CUA Cardinals, even at home games, unless it is football or basketball, and only if the team is doing well. And even when a team is doing well, it is dicey. CUA never pretended to have a stellar athletic reputation, and students are well aware that most sports teams can only take them so far, but they are still a dedicated group of student athletes with good hearts and persistent bodies. Most would agree that CUA needs a heavy dose of school spirit.
