Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There is no ethnic diversity on campus. Period. A huge chunk of the student body is Caucasian, while a decent amount are labeled as unreported, which leaves a pretty small percentage of the student body as racially identified. Hispanics, African Americans, and Asian Americans have the plurality. And while the University boasts students from every state, most hail from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. So this Northeastern university basically caters to Northeastern students. It is sad, especially considering CUA’s Washington, DC location, where every street corner is filled with diversity and culture.

Many students regret the fact that Catholic is not more racially diverse, since college is a good time for young adults to learn from other young adults who are different from each other in so many ways. But this is impossible when everyone is from a Philadelphia suburb. Be prepared for a sea of blonde, white students who can trace their ancestry back to Ireland or central New Jersey.

Diversity Improving

When I first came to visit the Catholic University of America, I noticed that there wasn't as much diversity being that there were a lot of white people throughout campus, but the amount of people from a different race has increased greatly since attending the University. There are multiple clubs and event associated with each race as well

It's Alright

I'll admit that the student body is pretty darn white. Being a music student, I do notice a higher percentage of foreign students and non-white students within the School of Music at least. This isn't to say that it is hard to be a minority student, though. I'm one of the few percentage points worth of Asians but I don't feel slighted in the least (though I'm an American by culture, really). I haven't noticed intolerance towards minorities (of any type) really at all. The school and student population is quite Catholic, but what would you expect? If one of your top priorities is great diversity, I'd probably look elsewhere. It wasn't a big concern of mine, and I'm quite happy here.

I like how there are different political perspectives on campus because it's interesting to hear their personal points of view.

Facts

Gay Pride

It is tricky, given that the University is the official university of the Vatican. There are no clubs specific to gay pride or gay students, but there is a formidable gay presence on campus.

Political Activity

The school, by virtue of its Catholic identity, is very conservative. Various Catholic-affiliated organizations, such as Students For Life and Esto Vir, exist at the University. But both CUA College Democrats and College Republicans are active on campus, hosting events, speakers, and parties.

Economic Status

Most students are from affluent to well-off families; however, most are generally modest about it. Students at CUA still play the part of “broke college kids,” and it's not uncommon for students to find on-campus or even outside jobs.

Most Common Religions

Roman Catholicism is the dominant religion for the obvious reason.

Minority Clubs on Campus

There is little cultural diversity on campus, so the amount of minority clubs reflects that fact. The Filipino Organization of Catholic University Students (FOCUS) is the most prominent club on campus. While a few other clubs exist, they have little presence.
