I just visited and over the years they have really cleaned up the surrounding area. There is still some work to be done to it. But to answer your question yes people do tend to over exaggerate it

Brookland is only dangerous if you aren't smart about your surroundings. The campus itself is very safe; there are emergency stations on campus that are all within eye distance of each other. Its safe to walk in Brookland in the daytime in a group, but Catholic is very on top of safety!

Northeast D.C. is not the safest locale, but it is not entirely dangerous—it's more of a "proceed with caution" area. The University's Department of Public Safety (DPS) has things more or less under control, but there is much room for improvement. It is true that in the past on-campus crime was more rampant. Obviously, it was nothing so horrible that it made the evening news, but car-jackings and armed robberies were all too common. Luckily, the campus has been safer since, with a stronger patrol car presence, additional emergency blue-lights and phones spread throughout campus, and DPS' text message alert system.

Still, many students complain that the officers stationed and on patrol in the middle of the night tend to be asleep and unresponsive when needed. Worst of all, students can recall times when they needed DPS presence, and the response was slow, dull, and unsupportive. So while DPS has been, in the larger picture, successful in lessening the on-campus crime rate over the past few years, students still do not feel completely safe due to DPS' questionable track record on response times and alertness.
