Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Despite being in Washington, DC, do not expect an eclectic bunch of speakers because they need to adhere to Catholic principles (though few exceptions are made).
  • Despite being in Washington, DC, the immediate neighborhood, Brookland, does not offer many entertainment or leisure options for college students.
  • Housing is not guaranteed for juniors and seniors, and many of them do request on-campus housing but are denied due to space.
  • Not everyone here is Catholic or is a priest or nun in the making.
  • Rooms are tiny, so do not let cool college movies trick you into believing you are moving into a penthouse.
Tips to Succeed
  • During the last two weeks before midterms and finals, teachers get a little sadistic and assign loads of work, so be sure to prioritize and not put things off for the last minute.
  • Make friends. They will make your time here unforgettable.
  • Take advantage of the many student organizations on campus. It is the best way to make friends and establish one’s self as a student leader.
  • Teachers here are friendly and helpful, so do not be afraid to ask for help or even establish a rapport with them; it will come in handy.
  • Washington, DC has so many opportunities, so be sure to look for a job or internship.

Acedemics, Faith and Service

We are serious about our Faith, and live the Gospel as best we can. We learn and grow in Faith and share with everyone here, no matter what their religion. We have many students of other faiths that love the atmosphere where you can freely practice what you believe in without problems. The acedemic side is wonderful, class sizes small and professors know you by name. The social scene is vibrant with activities of all kinds and clubs and schools always putting on something. We always give back to the community with thousands of service hours a month. It's a great way to live and share.

An Ivy of the Non Ivies, Loving Student Body, Professors That Actually Care

I honestly love the Catholic University of America. President Garvey is doing some great things to our university. Garvey is bringing a lot of prestige and attention to CUA. The professors really care. They give you so much help, even though they should considering how hard our classes are. Don't let the high acceptance rate of CUA make you think its a bad school. Catholic does not get as many applicant's as the average university because of the fact, we are the Catholic University of America. Classes are very rigorous but for a good purpose.

Facts

Traditions
  • Luaupalooza : Every year, Campus Ministry, in conjunction with various other student organizations, organizes the event Luaupalooza, in which the McMahon parking lot (and surrounding area) is transformed into a luau—with food, popular carnival rides, music, and more.
  • Metro Madness: At the beginning of the year, Campus Ministry’s The House, a group of student ministers who organize events for the student body, organizes an event called Metro Madness, where students go on a massive scavenger hunt in Washington, DC. The event is aimed at getting students to become familiar with the city and Metro routes; it also serves as an icebreaker for students to get to know each other.
  • Thanksgiving with Father Bob (and his mother): The one name new students will hear is Father Bob (Rev. Robert Schlageter), the University’s chaplain and a beloved figure on campus. Every year for Thanksgiving, he and his mother cook a Thanksgiving meal for students who do not have plans. It is a special event that captures the essence of Thanksgiving.
Urban Legends In the movies and on television, Catholicism is popularly portrayed as a religion with a history of spirits, miracles, and exorcism. In the spirit of this characterization, there is an urban legend regarding one of the buildings on campus. Caldwell Hall, which is the headquarters for the theology and religious studies department, is said to house the ghost of a priest who performed exorcisms in the attic. The student community really plays into it, pointing to bloodstains and dents in the wall where the priest had his fatal encounter with a possessed young girl.
