Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The Brookland neighborhood is not the prettiest, and therefore, does not have the prettiest houses, but it's not the ugliest area, either. Most students residing off campus are more than satisfied with their living conditions. Also, the apartments are generally nice and spacious inside. But at this point, students are just looking forward to the autonomy and freedom associated with living off campus, which after at least two years of living with Residential Assistants and abiding by “quiet hours” and no liquor rules is a breath of fresh air.

But students renting homes along campus beware: the University exercises power over students by putting “problem houses” on probation, and if neighbors complain about late-night partying and undesirable behavior, the University will take action. It hardly seems fair, but rules are rules, right? But even with that seemingly intrusive practice, the University is pretty helpful to students who need housing by hosting off-campus housing fairs and providing search tools for students. And really, if worse comes to worse, DC is a big enough city for someone to find a decently priced, decently equipped apartment.

Living in Lovely Brookland

The area around CUA is not the most friendly. Although off campus housing is slightly cheaper than campus dorms (depending on where you live) they are not highly availble and they are not the nicest. (We are located in the not so glamourous neighborhood of Brookland, Northeast DC). The neighborhood can be dangerous, and robberies happen frequently. Many upperclassmen choose to live on campus for these reasons.
