Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

When you tell people that you attend Centenary College, the response is often either “Where’s that?” or “Didn’t Robert Parish go there?” Though Centenary is not incredibly well-known for its athletics, the school did have its glory days. Back in the 1930s, the College had an amazing football team. And of course, the school was once home to Robert Parish. It’s a bit different today. There’s no football team, and basketball, while popular, doesn’t have the electric atmosphere it once had. But don’t think that athletic events are quiet affairs with empty bleachers. Students arrive in droves at basketball games, and once in a while, a game will inspire students to paint their faces and act like your average crazy sports fanatic. The other sports get some attention, though not necessarily the same excitement. Sports such as gymnastics, swimming, or volleyball usually bring in friends of the athletes and a few other loyal fans. Centenary is the smallest Division-I school, so the College is unique in that respect.

Though athletics are an important part of life at Centenary, they tend to take a back seat to academics and other student organizations. The absence of football makes Centenary much different than most other colleges. There is not much sports fanaticism, and school pride is not confined to athletic events. Although students are proud of the College’s athletic accomplishments, if asked to name the school mascot, they’ll sheepishly reply, “the Ladies and the Gents.” Students are quite aware the mascot doesn’t inspire much fear.

Grade a Sports

At Centenary College of Louisiana, varsity sports are a very big part of campus. Most of the students attending here are part of some athletic team. There are so many different sports available and intramural sports! We have great trainers and advisers at our fingertips whenever we need them. All of the students here are so supportive of all of the sports on campus. There is never an event here that is not completely packed.

In general, varsity sports at Centenary suck. They have losing seasons most years. Also, games are not well attended by students. There are lots of intramural opportunities that are participated in.

Centenary is the smallest school in Division I athletics. However, we do not have a football team. We do have a pretty good basketball team. We also have tennis, softball, baseball, and volleyball to name a few other varsity sports on campus. Intramural sports are very fun, and anyone can compete as long as they are not on the varsity team for that sport. We have intramural soccer, flag football, basketball, softball, and more! They are really fun, and I highly recommend playing.

Most Popular Sports

Basketball is really popular at Centenary. It definitely draws the largest crowds and is one of the few times you’ll see Centenary students paint their faces maroon and white.

Most Overlooked Teams

The cross country team seems to get the least attention. You don’t hear about the meets much, and it sometimes seems buried under the weight of other athletic teams.

School Spirit

Since Centenary has no football team, school spirit doesn’t reach the frantic, frenzied mania of most universities. You’ll rarely see students wearing face paint and large foam hands. That doesn’t mean that Centenary is completely void of spirit. Athletic events, mostly basketball, are filled with cheering fans. But the majority of students tend to show their support for the school in other ways than screaming their voices out at sports events. Most students are really interested in promoting the College to prospective students. Students will go out of their way to help admissions or other campus organizations. Students that are leaders of organizations such as the campus radio station or the newspaper are incredibly loyal to the school and determined to present a good image to the surrounding community.

Getting Tickets

Students can go to the Gold Dome to get their tickets in advance. Most of the time you can get into an event simply by showing your student ID at the door. All tickets are free to Centenary students.
