Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The Department of Public Service (DPS) is very visible on campus. There is only one patrol car, but you see it around all the time. There are eight officers, and most students get to know at least one of them by name. The familiarity doesn’t usually come from getting in trouble, but rather because the officers are so darn friendly. They’re always willing to unlock doors, escort you somewhere, or just chat for a while. Just because they’re nice, though, doesn’t mean they won’t do their job. Though drugs aren’t usually a problem, DPS is tough when students are found with drugs. Alcohol, while prohibited, isn’t as strictly monitored. If you’re caught with alcohol, they’ll usually write you up. If you’re a repeat offender or you cause excessive trouble, then they’ll probably make you go through an educational program about drinking.

DPS is also strict about parking. Though you can probably get away with parking in the wrong lot every now and then, if you do it too often, you will get ticketed—and it adds up quickly. DPS never seems too strict or oppressive. They do their job when they need to, though, so don’t think you’ll get away with everything. Because the campus is dry, they have to at least warn students if they see them drinking. Though you see DPS officers all the time, they never seem like they’re out to bust students. They’re much more interested in keeping the campus safe than arresting members of the student body.

Not Very Strict

The worst I've heard is how the staff searched the student's rooms for alcohol during Mardi Gras a few years ago. But nothing like that has happened since. Teachers are very liberal for the most part.

DPS varies: sometimes they are really strict, and other times they can be pretty lax. As long as you do your drinking off campus, or discreetly, you shouldn’t really have a problem.

The Centenary officers are fairly strict, but you can get away with a lot if you take the trouble to get to know the individual officers.
