Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Centenary’s drug scene is so small that it’s almost invisible. There are drugs, but if you’re not into that scene, you’ll probably never encounter it on campus. Students that do drugs tend to keep it quiet, and it’s usually nothing much harder than marijuana. The area around campus has plenty of drugs circulating around the neighborhood, but unless you hang out in those houses, you’re not likely to notice it. Though drugs have never been a major issue on campus, drinking is a slight problem. Centenary’s campus is dry, but you’ll see empty liquor bottles and beer cans piling up in dorm trash cans every now and then. Students do drink in the dorms and usually only get in trouble if they’re being loud and an RA hears them. There are also quite a few students who smoke. There are ashtrays in front of most of the dorms, and they’re always filled with cigarette butts. If you walk into Cline’s courtyard, you’re likely to see several students smoking cigarettes, cigars, and even pipes.

You could get through all four years at Centenary without ever seeing any drug use. Drinking, though, is something you can’t get away from. Even though the campus is dry, you’ll hear your suitemates playing drinking games and see students sitting on dorm porches drinking alcohol from inconspicuous glasses. It’s never anything incredibly obvious or disruptive, but you’ll know that drinking is going on. Alcohol is easy enough to avoid if you want to, but if you go to frat parties, you’re likely to feel pressured to drink.

Dry Campus

The campus is a dry campus, meaning there is no alcohol, or drugs, allowed on the campus property. The Department of Public Safety, or DPS, is pretty lenient the first offense, but do not expect to get away with it more than once. Peer pressure is not that common, mainly because everyone is very accepting of a person and the decisions that person makes.

I've never been aware of much drug use on campus. There are a couple scattered marijuana users, but that's it. Drinking is the big thing for most people.

The drug scene isn't really big. A lot of students pop "study drugs" but look down on everything else. Drinking is more popular but still isn't big.
