Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Centenary is surrounded by an eccentric and moderately shady neighborhood. You’ll sometimes hear rumors about drug dealers and burglaries. Although you’re aware that the neighborhood is not the safest area of Shreveport, you rarely feel unsafe on campus. When you turn on the evening news, it can be somewhat of a shock to hear about murders and burglaries that happened not too far away. Fortunately, there’s a deep sense of security when you walk around Centenary’s campus, even at night. But if you ever feel uncomfortable walking alone, just call the campus police and an officer or a member of student patrol will escort you. The worst problems have been car thefts, and those were dealt with quickly.

The amazing security is due to the very visible presence of the campus police. Officers constantly patrol the grounds. Students often get to know the officers well, so they feel completely comfortable reporting anything unusual. All the dorms have outside locks, and students are given keys to the building in addition to their room keys. While the locked dorms give the illusion of safety, it’s pretty easy to sneak into the dorms. The doors are often propped open, even though students are constantly threatened with fines for propping doors. Students are encouraged to keep their dorm rooms locked; though theft isn’t huge problem, things have been known to disappear. Generally, Centenary is a comfy little safety zone that provides a sense of security that is hard to find anywhere else in the city.

There's Not Much Crime Ever.

There's hardly ever any crime around here, just maybe like a burglary and some suspicious characters roaming about the school but nothing to get deathly scared over. DPS sends email's about crime updates and everything, and they'll text everyone in the school to let everyone know what's happening.

For the most part, security and safety on campus are top-notch, which I feel really helps to make the campus distinct from a city that once led the nation in homicide-per-capita ratio in the nation. Centenary is like a safe haven in a city that isn’t as secure as it appears to be.

Did You Know?

Centenary Campus Watch is a new program offered by DPS. If you ever watched the Crime Stoppers segment of your local news, it’s similar to that, but without the television exposure. The program allows students to call in at (318) 841-7238 and anonymously report a crime or any suspicious activity. If your tip helps to capture the bad guy, you can receive an award of up to $100.

Another new service that doesn’t really relate to campus safety, but is incredibly helpful, is the Check Your Ride program. Before long breaks, DPS officers will check your car for any problems. It’s a great way to make sure your tire won’t blow out on you as you make the long trek back home.
