Quick Stats

School Slang
  • The Caf: The campus cafeteria
  • C-Line: Cline Hall
  • DPS: Campus police
  • The Fish Bowl: This is the lobby of Cline, which has three walls of glass.
  • The Quad: Mickle Hall, Hamilton Hall, and the library surround this grassy area. If you noticed that there are only three buildings in the Quad, we’re just as confused as you are.
  • The Shell: This is the amphitheatre located in the middle of campus.
  • The SLO: Student Life Office
  • The SUB: The Student Union Building
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Always keep your dorm keys with you! Getting locked out often can cost you.
  • Bring a bag of quarters. The change machines never work and dirty clothes pile up.
  • The cafeteria saves the good food for the prospective students and trustees.
  • The first-year student activities are not mandatory.
  • The flowers only bloom for two weeks in the spring.
  • The high culinary point of your week will be chicken strip Tuesday.
Tips to Succeed
  • Don’t plagiarize. Don’t cheat. Ever! The Honor Code is serious business.
  • Finish the Centenary Plan as soon as possible.
  • Get involved with an organization right away!
  • Go to class. Teachers will notice if you are not there.
  • Go to office hours. The teachers get bored sitting there all alone!
  • If the network goes down, take several deep breaths and try not to panic.
  • Join something! Anything!
  • Know your degree requirement inside and out. Nasty surprises like, “Oh no! I’m missing a 300-level social science and now I can’t graduate,” are terrible graduation presents.
  • Speak up in class. The teachers love that.
  • Suck up to your teachers. They can provide you with amazing opportunities.
  • Try to finish core quickly.

Cool Things to Do!

I think what sets Centenary apart from other schools is just the fact that it's a private school. There's cool activities that other schools probably wouldn't get to do. I definitely enjoy going to CAB events, those are always fun and other activities that people put on, the things that people do here are totally awesome.

Facts

Traditions
  • Centenary Book Bazaar: Every September, Centenary holds the annual Book Bazaar in the Gold Dome. Volunteers collect some 40,000 books over the year and organize the event. The Bazaar is a great way to get some cheap books and records. Just be careful, because the building is packed and you’re likely to get reamed in the gut by a woman making a mad dash for a 25-cent Nicholas Sparks book. The Shreveport community is serious about their book collection. They often cart around rolling suitcases and wagons filled to the brim with books. Make sure to grab a book quickly if you want it, any languishing will result in said book being snatched away before you can blink.
  • Corrington Award: Every year, the faculty and students at Centenary present the John William Corrington Award for Literary Excellence to an established writer. The award is named after Centenary alum John William Corrington, who was a prolific poet. He was best known for his short novel Decoration Day, which was adapted into a film starring James Garner. He was also the head writer for several television series including General Hospital and Search for Tomorrow. Recent recipients of the award include Debra Greger and William Logan, Michael Longley, and Eavan Boland.
  • Freak Week: On Centenary’s campus, the week of Halloween is known as Freak Week. On this week you’ll see cardboard ghouls hanging from the trees. You can paint a pumpkin in the SUB, though ever since pumpkins were thrown off the third floor of Cline into the courtyard, this tradition has been in danger of dying. If you’re the gambling type, Casino Night is held every year during Freak Week. You can win a bunch of cool prizes and curb your gambling addiction without actually losing any money.
  • Kollege Kapers: Kollege Kapers was a popular touring variety show in the 1940s that featured a cast of Centenary students. Though the tradition was lost for many years, the college recently breathed some life back into the event. These days the Kapers stay on campus and perform jazz and big band music
Urban Legends
  • Back in the 1980s a couple DJs at KSCL, the campus radio station, decided to play a speech by then president Ronald Reagan. After airing the speech, one DJ said, “Okay, you can put Reagan back in his cage.” Several days later the Secret Service arrived on campus and promptly shut down the radio station until the threat was cleared. Apparently Mr. Reagan was not trapped in a cage, and the station soon reopened.
  • The elevator in Mickle Hall is haunted by the ghost of a former College president.
  • The second floor of James Annex is haunted by the ghost of a former student.
  • The tunnel system beneath the library was constructed as a bomb shelter during the 1950s.
