Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

In terms of entertainment, your options are limited, especially if you’re under 21. Tourists visit Shreveport for one thing: the casinos. The bars and clubs are all 21-and-up. Underage students often travel an hour away simply to go to a teen club. The bars are all pretty small, but the atmosphere and bands often make up for tight conditions. Many students simply opt for hanging out at a frat party instead of heading to a bar. There are sometimes parties in students’ houses and apartments. Although Shreveport can be boring, you can fill up your nights if you know the right people and places. There is a small but growing section of Shreveport youth that follow local bands religiously. Sound Stage is usually filled with high school kids and loud heavy metal bands, but sometimes an event will attract an older crowd. If you pay attention to flyers on campus, you’ll realize there’s a band playing nearly every weekend somewhere in Shreveport. The bands vary from heavy metal and punk to jazz and folk. ‘Lil Joe’s, directly across the street from Centenary, is becoming a busy venue for local bands. Having fun in Shreveport is mainly about meeting people and learning where to go. Don’t expect to go out and run into something exciting, Shreveport is much too small for fun to find you. Experiencing the Shreveport nightlife takes a bit of investigative work, but it’s exciting when you find it.

Bar Scene

The downtown area is about a 5 minute drive from campus. Lots of bars with lots of college kids from colleges from around the ares. There are 3 other colleges in the city so nightlife is good if you can afford it.

Joe’s, Maurice’s, Chicago, and Voodoo are okay bars. If you want to go to Central, it can be okay as well, though honestly, there are more big, black women there than hot guys. Shreveport sucks in the bar/club department.

Parties on campus can be pretty cool, but nothing compared with big school party scenes. Off-campus activities where alcohol is served are restricted to 21-and-up, but it’s not that much of a loss. Liquor isn’t hard to find. If you are 21, the casinos offer a gambling venue, and close to campus there are a few favorite Centenary haunts.

Organization Parties

There are often parties on the weekends at Centenary. These are almost always held at the fraternity houses. The school sometimes sponsors dances, but students rarely show up.

Club ListingsWhat's This?

Roper’s Night Life

Roper’s is a 21-and-up club with a country western theme. They often have live music, and they recently added Roperdacious, a bucking mechanical bull. Though not frequented by students too often, any place where you can pretend you’re a character in Urban Cowboy deserves mention.

Central Station

Central Station is one of the few clubs in Shreveport. It is a gay club that students frequent every now and then, but it’s known for being a bit shady. There’s a regular drag show every weekend.

Bar ListingsWhat's This?

Noble Savage Tavern

The Noble Savage is a small bar located in downtown Shreveport. It’s a favorite of students and faculty alike. There’s live music six nights a week; they rest on Sunday. The atmosphere is great. Though the bar is relatively new, the building is over 150 years old. For those who aren’t too drunk to aim, they have free darts and 50-cent pool tables.

‘Lil Joe’s Bar & Grill

‘Lil Joe’s lives up to its name. It’s really small. The cramped space is often overlooked, though, because of the amazing bands that frequent the bar. It’s located directly across the street from Centenary. Though students don’t frequent it too often, it’s been growing in popularity because of the constant stream of bands being booked. Although it’s 21-and-up, you can sometimes get in if you bat your eyes and claim to know the band. The eye move usually works best for the girls.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

Java Junction

Java Junction is located directly across the street from campus. It offers free wireless access and has a great atmosphere for studying. They serve coffee, sandwiches, and a Louisiana favorite: beignets. The food isn’t too pricey and the location can’t be beat. On Fridays, they often have jazz musicians performing. It’s definitely a place you’ll want to check out.

101 Kings Hwy.

(318) 865-9313

Soundstage

Soundstage is a high school hang out. It’s the place where young goth kids go to listen to heavy metal and smoke. If you’re into the heavy metal scene, you may want to check it out. While it usually caters to a younger, more “teen angst” crowd, every now and then they’ll book a band that doesn’t scream and make your ears bleed.

516 Texas St.

(318) 222-0156

Artspace

Artspace is an art gallery, and the ground floor of the building is filled with bright and colorful artwork. The basement houses artwork from several local artists. While the space is generally used for art, local bands often perform in the basement area. It has a really hip atmosphere and is a great place to go if you’re looking to get into the art scene.

710 Texas St.

(318) 673-6535

Columbia Café

Columbia Café is a very expensive restaurant with great atmosphere. It’s a good idea to go there just for the exotic coffees, or you’ll end up spending way more than you should. Centenary professors often go to Columbia Café on the weekends, so don’t be surprised if you see a table filled with several of your teachers. The café also has wireless Internet access and often has live bands or a piano player.
