College Prowler Take

If Louisiana is known for anything (besides Mardi Gras), it’s the food. Shreveport is no exception. There are some amazing restaurants, and you’ll quickly learn the spots that meet the college student’s criteria—cheap and good. There are plenty of different kinds of food to choose from. Also, you don’t need to worry about transportation to get a good meal. Some of the best restaurants are directly across from campus. Strawn’s, Joe’s Bar & Grill, and George’s are all greasy-spoon diners near campus. PieWorks is the best pizza place in town, and it’s right across the street. While the diners are all cheap, PieWorks can get expensive. Going with a bunch of friends and splitting pizzas usually helps. There’s also a coffee and sandwich place across the street from campus that is great for studying and has wireless Internet access. The best restaurants in Shreveport are locally owned.

Being in Louisiana, Shreveport has some amazing seafood and Cajun restaurants. Shane’s and Herby K’s are the best and cheapest places to find good seafood. Copeland’s, though a chain restaurant, also has some great dishes. It’s much more expensive, so you’ll probably want to check it out when your parents are paying. There are also some great places that serve Greek, Indian, Vietnamese, Mexican, Italian, and Chinese cuisine. It’s nearly impossible to check out every place in Shreveport, though it’s fun trying. If you have the money, eat out as much as you can. The few extra pounds are worth it.

The restaurants are awesome. The chains aren’t too great. Herby K’s is good. Also Murrell’s, Strawn’s, and Joe’s are pretty tasty.

Restaurants off campus are great. Steakhouses include Superior’s Steakhouse and Kon Tiki, to name my favorites. If one is eating light, Juri’s (on Youree drive near the Target store) and McAlister’s (not far from the same location) are real prizes.

There are mostly chain restaurants. There are two vegetarian places, Eartheral and Healthy Planet, that are only open for a few hours around lunch time, but both are really good. PieWorks is right across the street from campus and is really popular. Counter Culture is down the street and has really good yogurt.

Shreveport actually has some awesome places to grab a bite. We’ve got all the chains like Taco Bell and Burger King, even some rarer chains like Arby’s. We’ve got fancier places like some nice Italian eateries. Best of all, we’ve got your home cookin’ and open-24-hours places, like IHOP and Papa’s.

Shreveport has some awesome places to eat! Ichiban (sushi), George’s, ‘Lil Joe’s, Murrell’s (all greasy-spoon type places), Yeero Yeero (Greek), Crawfish Tyme (boiled crawfish!), Tacomania (Mexican), India’s, Utsav (both Indian), and China Hot (really cheap Chinese) are some of my favorites.

Did You Know?

Strawn’s Eat Shop is known as a Shreveport tradition. Established in 1944, the greasy-spoon diner has become known for its amazing pies. It was featured in Southern Living and mentioned on the Food Network’s Best of . . . . Try the strawberry pie. It’s hands down the best pie you’ll ever eat.

Shreveport hosts Mudbug Madness every year. The festival celebrates Louisiana’s favorite and most famous food—crawfish. It’s held each Memorial Day and spans four days.
