parking on the street is a pain, and the parking passes are too much money for a student who is unemployed.

Would it be smart to just not take my car with me to college freshman year?

No. This college is in a rural area. You can walk anywhere in town, but parking is only expensive on campus, and it's convenient to have a car so you can go home when you want to do so.

The car would be of convenience to go to work off-campus, for trips out of town, and to load stuff for a group program if need be.
