Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Athletes will tell you that participating in a varsity sport at Centre was one of the best choices during their college careers, but non-athletes may barely notice that athletics at Centre exist. Centre is NCAA Division III, in a small conference, and that not only fosters an academics-first mentality, but also improves your chance of making the team. Some teams are easier to join than others, but almost anyone with some natural ability or determination can play a sport at Centre. The drawback is that the only people who attend home games are members of the Centre community, like your mom.

In short, varsity athletics are taken seriously by the athletes who participate in them, while other students view the games as more of a social event. Athletes also manage to have the goofy fun that bigger schools sometimes leave out in the fierce competition. The most popular sports to watch are soccer and football; however, field hockey and baseball games can also draw large crowds. Intramural sports are popular for non- or off-season athletes, and girls IM football draws crowds that rival some varsity games. The club sports boast huge memberships, and pick-up games of Frisbee, kickball, or sledding are popular. The seasonal Centre-wide IM competitions are huge, and watching the dodgeball tournament is big fun.

We Love the Teams, but Only When They Make the Championships

We're a Division III school. The majority of us here aren't here to throw a ball. We're here for a first rate education. That's not to say we don't support our teams, but the regular season has low attendance. That being said, the fans who attend regular season games are very hardcore.

That being said, when our teams get towards the end of their seasons and they've had a winning season...we show up in droves. And we love the hell out of those athletes whether they win or lose. So we aren't a rain or shine school, but we may not show up on overcast days that are kind of chilly.

Many students on campus...

Many students on campus participate in either varsity sports or intramurals. Varsity teams fair pretty well considering we are a D-III school and no one receives any financial support for participating. Although games are not central to social activities on campus, the men's basketball and soccer are usually well attended. In recent years, there has been a lot of success in swimming and diving, cross country, basketball, and soccer. IM sports are important to some people but not everyone. They do provide good motivation for team building or organizations. Even though the school is small, the overall sports scene is a huge part of Centre life. We don't offer extremely diverse sports, but we provide the opportunities for most main stream sports or people can form club sports teams.

Most Popular Sports

For overall attendance, football and soccer are the most popular, but students love IM sports and a good pickup game of kickball. Croquet in the quad is also popular, and when it gets warm outside, Slip ‘N’ Slides also appear.

Most Overlooked Teams

The swim team was recently nationally ranked as one of the most overlooked teams in the nation after their performance in the conference championship.

School Spirit

Centre students are proud of their school, and the boys have been known to get rowdy at sporting events by painting themselves, making signs, and yelling snobby things at other teams, like “that’s alright, that’s okay, you’re going to work for us one day.” Girls tend to be subtler in their cheering, but the Go-Centre-Go spirit is definitely present.

Getting Tickets

There is no need to get tickets to attend a sporting event, just show up before the game starts with your student ID.
