Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Centre isn’t exactly known for its diversity, and walking around campus usually involves seeing a lot of people that look alike. Most students are Christian, from middle-class to upper-middle-class families, and white. The diversity at Centre comes mainly from exchange students, and Centre boasts a large number of foreign students who are studying on campus. What Centre does have, however, is students interested in a variety of things, possessing different sexual preferences, and having a variety of backgrounds. While Centre isn’t exactly a melting pot, it is a school that provides, if nothing else, an education on worldly cultural, social, and economic differences.

The individuals you meet during your time at Centre may not be the most sundry group of individuals, but you will manage to grow and expand your horizons. This is in part because of the value the campus community places on diverse beliefs, religions, and ethnicities. An example is the Diversity Student Union, which is a large campus organization, despite the fact that Centre lacks diversity. Perhaps the biggest progressive move by the administration to increase diversity is the self-knowledge that Centre lacks in diversity. The College openly tries to recruit non-white races and ethnicities, but for the time being, Centre is still pretty monotonously non-diverse.

Not Very Ethnically Diverse, but Diverse in Other Ways

The campus is predominantly white, but there is no racially or ethnically motivated prejudice on those who are not Caucasian. There is diversity as far as political and religious views. For example, Centre lives up to its name politically; the majority of students and professors are relatively moderate, especially for being at a private, liberal arts college, or alternatively, for being at a college in Kentucky. Socio-economically, most students are well-off, but nobody really flaunts it. As for sexual orientation, everybody is very welcoming and just about everybody knows and/or is friends with somebody who is not heterosexual.

Mostly White

Most people here are upper middle class, however when Centre attempts to bring in diversity, most of those students are not really qualified to go here and fall behind. Most people segregate themselves into groups of their own race.

Getting Better, Slowly

Centre is fairly diverse for comparable schools, especially since the Posse group began. Those students that are diverse on campus are very well embraced. We also have a proportionately high number of international students.

Facts

Gay Pride

The campus is accepting of gay students and has B-GLAD, an on-campus support group. Although relatively small, the gay community is established, although quiet, within Centre’s campus. The neighboring city of Danville and nearby towns have, at times, been unsupportive.

Political Activity

Most students are politically conservative; however, the CentrePeace, B-Glad, and CentreDemocrats are clubs that are strong representations of the diversity of Centre students.

Economic Status

Most Centre students are from middle- or upper-middle-class families. While the students with the wealthiest parents are usually the hardest to spot, the only snobbery on campus comes from middle-class students trying to pose as upper-middle.

Most Common Religions

There are a lot of Christian groups on campus; Wednesday night is the popular CCF meeting

Minority Clubs on Campus

Number-wise, the diversity on campus is very low, but the DSU (Diversity Student Union), Hispanic Society, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) are popular clubs that many students join and support.
