Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Danville itself has a very low crime rate, and it makes sense that the even smaller campus would follow this trend. Although crime is not completely unknown on campus, the usual problems are petty theft and vandalism. Most of the thefts that do occur happen in dorms or cars from people outside the Centre bubble, and they usually are the result of students leaving their cars or dorms unlocked. Many students, and faculty members for that matter, leave their belongings unattended in places such as the library or Cowan with little fear of theft or damage. In regards to personal safety, the Department of Public Safety ought to be commended for their late-night patrols, transports around campus at any time of day (or weather), and general concern for the well-being of students, like jump-starting your car at 2 a.m. so you can go to Arby’s.

DPS officers know almost all the students by nickname, even the freshmen, and although this dedicated attention can sometimes be unwanted, it speaks to the security and community emphasis on Centre’s grounds. Most of the reports DPS receives are about noisy neighbors or parking violations, and they are quick to appear on the scene to issue tickets or quiet things down. They also maintain an online crime log that usually gets more laughs than concern. Safety and security is taken very seriously at Centre, and the security the students feel reflects it.

Totally Safe

There have been some minor crimes but the Department of Public Safety actively patrols campus and there are no major crimes. There is some vandalism.

Pretty Safe

Centre's on-campus security, DPS, does a pretty good job at making sure campus safe and welcoming at all times. However, they obviously can't be everywhere, and it's best to be careful, especially at night.

Danville Public Safety Is Tops.

Centre is a safe campus, and that's largely due to Danville Public Safety, called DPS for short. DPS is our on campus security that works around the clock to ensure students are having fun, but doing so safely. What's more, they tend to have very good relationships with the students and because of this, earn their respect pretty easily. They're always willing to escort students on golf carts who feel unsafe traversing campus or parking lots at night, they keep an eye on parties but aren't intrusive, and they are really good about unlocking doors on campus to buildings which you have expressed written permission to be in after hours. That's not to say everything on Centre's campus is perfect. We do have students who vandalize our dormitories. Vandals usually strike early on in the academic year and are presumed to be inebriated at the time of incident. The vast majority of campus does not tolerate this behavior though and students are generally willing to divulge information to DPS when it occurs. Additionally, you'll find that some students' things go missing, but this only happens to students who leave their doors unlocked on a regular basis. I've had two bikes stolen at Centre...that's the only frustrating aspect of security. But it's no one's fault but my own, I left them unlocked on the nights they went missing.
