Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Don’t buy the extra-long twin sheets; the regular twin ones will do fine.
  • Freshman girls and guys dorms are same-sex only for the first six weeks.
  • Get the smallest meal plan offered.
  • Talk to your roommate in the summer so you don’t end up with two of everything.
Tips to Succeed
  • Don’t go home every weekend.
  • Don’t talk about other people—it’s a small campus—they’ll find out.
  • Get your 12 convos in.
  • Go to class, and do your homework.
  • Go to your professor’s office hours.
  • If you’re a girl, go on the sorority weekend dinners; it’s a great way to meet other freshmen and upperclassmen, even if you don’t want to Rush.
  • Join a club, work out with hallmates, meet people.
  • Speak up during class.
  • Take good notes.

Inside Scoop - Centre

I haven't attended any other college so it's hard to compare from an insider's perspective. But in comparing notes with other people, one thing that sets Centre apart is it's small size and the incredible access that gives me to the faculty. Not only that, Centre encourages students to be involved and makes it easy to create new campus organizations if an area of interest isn't already available. I love that Centre is becoming more highly recognized (example: Forbes recently ranked it #1 of all private and public schools in a 17 state area) because when I graduate, my degree from there will mean something in the job market. Finally, Centre allows students to self-design majors, which is what I've done. My major combines Environmental Studies, Sustainability, Development & Justice.

Facts

Traditions
  • C6H0: One of the greatest football upsets of the 20th century was in 1921 when Centre played Harvard in what was supposed to be a routine warm-up game for the Ivy League giant. Centre kicked Harvard’s hiney, 6–0. Back on campus, students went crazy writing the now well-known formula on everything from cows to the post office, where it can still be seen today.
  • Carnival: Every spring, SAC sponsors Carnival, a weekend long theme party that features Centre Jam Bands, a Cowan cookout on the lawn, inflatable activities like moonbounce and a foam pit, and culminating in a headlining musical artist/band like Ben Folds or They Might be Giants.
  • The Centre Talent: Started recently, this tradition involves graduating seniors. The day before graduation, seniors give their talent, a small metal token imprinted with the Centre seal, to someone who has been instrumental in their college career.
  • Dead Fred: Fred Vinson was a Centre graduate who went on to become Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Vinson was a great football player, and like many of the other football players, a Phi Delt. To this day, his portrait makes it to every home game and even some of the tough away games. When Centre hosted the vice-presidential debate in 2000, Dead Fred had his own special security credential, and the portrait was the first “person” to be seated.
  • Kissing on the Seal: One of Centre’s sweetest traditions involves the campus seal, which is embedded in the brick walkway in front of Old Centre. The rumor goes that if two students kiss while standing on the seal at midnight, then they are destined to marry.
  • Running the Field: This age-old tradition has been under fire by administration in the last few years, but it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. On Boys’ Bid Day, the new members start on the opposite end of the field hockey field and run toward their respective houses. It’s typical, although Centre-outlawed, for actives to meet anywhere from halfway to in front of the houses and wrestle them to the ground.
  • Running the Flame: Students started running around this sculpture naked sometime in the ‘80s and haven’t stopped since. Usually, students drop trou around Olin, but braver souls have been known to ‘run the flame’ from Greek Row or even North side. If caught, it’s a stiff $100 fine, and DPS has been known to interrogate the runners . . . naked.
Urban Legends
  • Alligators live in the basement of Young.
  • There are tunnels underground all over campus.
  • There is a ghost who likes to mess with the electricity on the third floor of Breck, and the administration refuses to tell the students which room it is because they still let students live there.
  • There is the ghost in Sutcliffe.
