Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The nightlife tends to be what you make it. Pre-parties are very popular, followed by a night on fraternity row. Pre-parties sometimes start at happy hour in Danville and then move back to campus, but for those 21 and under, they start on campus. The pre-parties tend to center around drinking games, while happy-hour excursions focus more on cocktails and gossip. Weekends and Wednesday nights are usually the big party nights, but there are ample opportunities throughout the week, like karaoke or birthdays. Fraternity parties are popular because anyone is welcome at any house. The five fraternities have very different vibes, and each one caters to a different crowd or mood. Depending on your taste, you can usually find a place that fits your scene. There is loud dancing on pool tables, poker games, or ‘80s mania, and parties can often last until 3 or 4 a.m.

Different cliques at Centre also throw different types of parties—the drama kids usually have their own parties, and seniors are more apt to host theme parties or loud pre-parties at their on-campus apartments. Off-campus parties tend to be wilder but never last as long as the parties on campus. Most of Centre tends to stay on campus, at least late into the night, because everyone else is there. The downside is that the fraternity parties can get old, especially by your senior year, but usually either you or a couple of your friends have apartments or houses. Date parties and theme parties are always good entertainment, and it’s just fun to dress up.

Work Hard, Play Hard

That's pretty much the motto at Centre. Come weekend evenings, Greek organizations host parties that anyone (affiliated or not) can attend.

The social scene at Centre can get...

The social scene at Centre can get old fast, unless one learns to party creatively. When it comes to parties, there are essentially three options: Greek, off campus (less common), or small/personal. If you’ve seen one frat party, you’ve seen them all, so I say, go with number three, for the most part. The best thing is usually to pre-party, and this almost always means drink furiously with friends, and then go out. Although most frat parties suck, Centre is small enough to make going out and seeing people enjoyable. Of course, this all depends on your interests and definition of fun. If you like grinding and competing with loud music just to have civil conversation, Centre’s social scene is for you. If not, don’t worry, you are not alone, and other options are out there.

Parties on campus are good...

Parties on campus are good usually, but it seems like it’s a rising and then lowering of the tide. Sometimes, stuff is really sweet, sometimes it’s nothing but a bunch of guys dancing on tables, and then sometimes campus is totally dead.

Facts

Club Crawler

There aren’t any clubs in Danville, so students either stay on campus or head out on the town for karaoke or swank drinks with live music.

Bar Prowler

Since there aren’t any clubs, and the bar/restaurants close early, happy hour is big for students 21 and over. Danville started serving alcohol by the drink in 2003 and has started getting cool restaurants that can serve alcohol with food. Bars are technically still illegal, so students usually go to restaurants for dinner and drinks, live music and drinks, or karaoke night and drinks.

Bar ListingsWhat's This?

Pizza Hut (The Winners Circle)

A Pizza Hut that serves alcohol—although a weird combination—does have a bucket of four beers for $9. The bar is set off from the restaurant, and it’s worth going to at least to see the local atmosphere once or twice.

Reno’s Roadhouse

Reno’s has karaoke Monday through Saturday nights, and happy hour starts at 3 p.m. and goes until 7 p.m. Appetizers are half-off, but the best deal is domestic bottled beer for $1.25. Large groups of students go here on Wednesdays to mix with the locals, watch some line dancing, and sing country music.

Applebee’s

A well-known restaurant, Applebee’s is a popular hangout spot because it serves good food and happy hour starts at 3 p.m., ends at 7 p.m., and then starts again at 10 p.m. and goes until close. If strapped for cash, during happy hour their appetizers are half-off along with most drinks and beers.

Guadalajara Mexican Restaurant

The Guad is one of the most popular restaurants for Centre students. The food can be expensive, order á la carte, but the drinks are huge. Try the jumbo beer during happy hour, 32 ounces for $2.50. Margaritas are their specialty.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

Three Babes and a Monkey

Three Babes is within walking distance from campus, and unlike the other coffeeshops in town, they offer food also. The staff is incredibly friendly, but their food is a lot like what’s offered on campus at the Café. They do offer a Centre discount, and it’s a great place to go to get off campus or meet for lunch.

(859) 236-6642

Eclectic Coffee

Eclectic has good coffee, a great atmosphere, and the nicest employees. They have many board games available to play, some couches and chairs for studying, and they offer a Centre discount. This is a great place to go to relax, hang out, or study.

Big Valley

Big Valley has the best coffee in town and offers many specialty treats and snacks. They don’t, however, offer any seating, so your best bet is to grab a good cup of java while you’re running errands or before class.
