Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

For the first month of school, students love the cafeteria. It offers a variety of cuisines and serves the best desserts, including frozen yogurt, cookies, and cakes. However, after about the second or third month, students grow tired of the same chicken and rice dish. Many opt for daily hamburgers or chicken nuggets with french fries, which only contribute to the Freshman 15. The cafeteria does offer different entrées, like pizza, salad, sandwiches, and pasta, but they are the same options every day. Students who are trying to eat healthy have even less variety, and usually eat a salad or grilled chicken for every meal.

Students use their meal plans when they eat at the cafeteria, so they never really know how much the food costs in dollars. If a student who doesn’t have a meal plan wants to eat in the cafeteria, he or she has to pay $10 for lunch or $15 for dinner, which is extremely overpriced. The cafeteria promotes itself as a buffet-style dining option to justify these high costs, but most students only have one entrée, a beverage, fruit, and maybe a cookie, which is not worth $10 or $15. Students are not even allowed to take any food out of the cafeteria, so they often hide fruit in their bags and make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for later to try to get the most from their money. The cafeteria is a good experience for a freshmen. It is a very social environment because it is the only cafeteria on campus, so students are sure to see numerous classmates and friends at each meal. But, most students move off campus their sophomore or junior year to have a kitchen so they can cook food they actually want to eat.

The Thrill Fades

The first few weeks the cafeteria food is everything one would want. But after the first semester or so the options get old. Though good days with new or favorite dishes keep the student content and the long days it doesn't really matter one just eats anything! The great thing about Chapman is that one can personalize their meal in the hall, and there are other food options on campus. The prime location of the college, walking distance of downtown Orange, brings a variety of restaurants and eateries.

A Lot of Variety, Not Always Healthy

In the caf, you always have an option of about 8 different meals that all have different cultural backgrounds. There is always sushi and a salad bar, as well as soup, cheeseburgers and grilled chicken in case you don't like any of it. The food tastes delicious, but sometimes it is extremely unhealthy for you even when it seems like it should be healthy. There are plenty of options for getting food on campus as well. We have three places in the student union to get food, another place in the library and another place in one of the academic buildings. Also, if you are every hungry for a late night snack you can just go to Henley Basement and get the most delicious pizza you will ever eat. They have a bunch of other stuff too, like salad, candy, ice cream, various sodas, etc.

We're Lucky

While the value isn't the best, the food is great compared to other colleges. There are stations from all different places in the world and there is always a variety. After awhile you are used to seeing the same items every 3-4 weeks. But overall the food is good and you can eat as much as you want
