Quick Stats

School Slang
  • AF : Argyros Forum. This is the main building on campus where classrooms, the Associated Students office, and the Chapman gift store are located.
  • BB: Blackboard, the website that allows students and professors to communicate.
  • Dodge: Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, known as the "film school," located two blocks from campus.
  • GE: General education requirements. These are classes all students need to take to graduate; requirements include a science class, English class, and a history class.
  • OA: Orientation assistant, who leads orientation week, when new students are introduced to the school.
  • The Panther: Chapman's student-run newspaper.
  • P-Saf: Public Safety, Chapman's security staff.
  • The Sammys : Members of the Jewish fraternity, Sigma Alpha Mu (SAM). This chapter is not yet formally recognized as a fraternity by Chapman.
  • Tabling : Greek organizations, student clubs, and other organizations "table" (literally stand behind a table with poster boards) in the Argyros Forum walkway to promote upcoming events.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Bring a car to Chapman. It is impossible to get around Southern California without one.
  • Bring earplugs because the dorms are very loud.
  • Get a bike if you are going to be at the film school—it is about three blocks from the main campus.
  • Get a Disneyland pass.
  • If you are going to go Greek, do so freshman year.
  • You don't need to read the book for orientation week.
Tips to Succeed
  • Be nice to everyone. Word gets around very fast because it is such a small school.
  • Do interterm at least once. This is a chance to earn extra credits, travel, or finish some general education requirements during the four-week period between winter break and spring semester.
  • Do not take a Friday morning class
  • Get involved on campus, whether it's joining Greek life, Associated Students, sports team, or student club/organization.
  • Go to professors' office hours. They are eager and happy to help you receive a good grade in their classes.
  • Make friends with the cafeteria employees.
  • Take a class on the Holocaust. Chapman always has influential speakers on this topic.
  • Take advantage of the Center for Academic Success, where you can receive free one-on-one tutoring from another student.
  • Try to avoid taking once-a-week three-hour classes.
  • Try to have GE (general education) requirements double as a major/minor requirement.
  • Visit the Career Center to get help finding an internship or a job and to get your resumé critiqued.

Lots of Variety

A great event that many people participate in is the "Undie Run". Another great thing about Chapman is the fact they offer a Bowling class-- Yup, you get to bowl 2 times a week!

Dodge College is AWESOME... but some of the people are dodgy!

Dodge College, the Chapman Film School, is really quite amazing. The facilities rival (and actually surpass) USC, UCLA, and Loyola Marymount! There are digital suites, theatres, lounges, and tons of other amenities that contribute to the quality of creative expression for Chapman students. However, the film school does attract a ton of cut-throat, USC-rejected, over-glorified clones who will do just about anything to brag about their talents. Walking through the hall on an average day, you hear people talking, "Did you know my mom is a famous designer?" or "Did you know that I have a Ferrari and a Lexus?" Basically, there is always someone who flaunts his/her wealth, connection with celebrities, knowledge of the industry, etc. Needless to say, it gets tedious after a while. I feel as if a lot of people in Dodge do not value their education or artistic integrity because they have Daddy's credit card at their disposal. Dodge College is a great, extremely professional school. I personally wish that the student body were just as accommodating.
