Best Time to Look for a Place

Students should start their off-campus housing search at least four months before they intend to move in.

Popular Areas Many students live in houses along Walnut Avenue and Chapman Avenue, both of which are a quick car ride or walk from campus. If students aren't lucky enough to find a house, they usually live in The Renaissance and Allure Apartments, near Angel Stadium.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The dorms are a great place to socialize and have fun, but they're not practical after sophomore year. Almost all upperclassmen live off campus because they want their own kitchen and their own space. A student's best bet is to share a house with two or three other people to reduce the cost. It's very easy to find a house if a student begins his or her search early and talks to other students who have houses to see when they are moving out. There are many houses in walking distance from school, and if they are farther than that, it is usually less than a five-minute car ride.

Apartments are also a popular alternative to the dorms. There are numerous apartments surrounding Chapman, and all of them are less than a 10-minute drive. The apartments are much more expensive than a house, but they do come fully furnished and with laundry and gym facilities. The only drawback to living off campus is not being as connected to Chapman. But, many students eventually find a balance between having their alone time at their house or apartment and participating in Chapman events to feel like they still belong on campus.

Off-Campus

Living off campus is expensive, not convenient, hard to find, and just all round not great. I wish I could have lived on campus again, but it is too crowded for upperclassmen to live on campus, and also too expensive.

Reasonable Off-Campus Housing

Because Chapman is in Orange, it's pretty pricey to find an off-campus apartment or house. My roommates and I are pretty lucky we found the house we did because it's not too far from campus and it's a cozy place. It is on the more expensive side for rent and appliances/maintenance as a college student, but we're happy with where we ended up.
