Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Student opinion on Chatham athletics varies, although all agree that anyone who enjoys sports will find that they can be a vital part of their campus life. The University is a member of Division III's Presidents' Athletic Conference, or PAC, and offers nine varsity sports, including hockey, softball, soccer, swimming, and water polo, to name a few. Intramural sports are more varied, and while some say they aren't an essential part of campus life, others say they are a blast. Student athletes, save for a few sports, can do almost all of their training in the Athletic & Fitness Center's weight room, dance studio, swimming pool, and basketball court. In addition, student athletes at Chatham are able to balance sports and school. The swim team, for example, was on the Team Scholar All-American list in 2009 with a collective GPA of 3.33.

Students who are big on school spirit or who are looking for sport scholarships might not be a fit for Chatham. The sporting events here don't attract large crowds, but rather, have small, dedicated fan bases. And, as an NCAA Division III institution, Chatham does not offer scholarships for student athletes. However, students who love their sports will love what Chatham University has to offer.

Sports Are Doing Great!

With a doctor on staff just for students participating in sports and an amazing athletic center with beautiful swimming pool, rock wall, and elevated indoor track, we're definitely spoiled! We have a fantastic hockey team, swimming team, and even water polo! The intramural sports are also a lot of fun :)

Chatham Lacks School Spirit and Good Teams

Our teams don't win often, so the fans in the stands are often friends or family members of the teams. It's hard to rally around the teams since they don't win.

School Spirit

School spirit at Chatham can be very sadly apathetic. At "Cougar Fanatic" games, a series sponsored by Student Activities to encourage fan participation, as well as "Purple Reign" fundraising games, student participation is few and far in between. Most students who come to watch athletic competitions are either other athletes or friends and roommates of the athletes. There is the rare student who comes just to support the teams, but attendance at games is usually low, even though the student population in general is supportive of the athletes. Student Activities, however, constantly looks for ways to increase attendance at games!

Getting Tickets

Students get free admission, and no tickets are required for athletic events. Occasionally, fundraising events are held at athletic competitions, and even in those cases, donations are suggested but not required.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Frick Park and Schenley Park, especially Bridle Trail and Panther Hollow, are some good walking spots. The Chatham mile loop is also great for walks and is safe since it's on campus!

Did You Know? The University's colors are green and white, but the athletic teams for the undergraduate college wear purple and white since only the undergraduate women's college has athletic teams.
