Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Though Chatham University is small, the campus offers a wealth of diversity. Ethnic backgrounds are fairly homogeneous at Chatham, but Caucasian, African American, and Asian populations are well represented, and ethnic diversity rarely raises issues among students. Chatham's campus is also home to students from approximately 25 countries who bring a variety of cultures to the University environment. Religious backgrounds are similarly divided between predominantly Christian, Jewish, and Muslim groups. Students are extremely tolerant of different religions and religious garments on campus. There are no worship services, even though there is a chapel on campus. The chapel is used for student performances and opening and closing convocations. In December, there is a candlelight service that features religious readings from various religious traditions.

One hundred percent of students said the Chatham environment is either very or mostly tolerant, which becomes especially apparent when it comes to Chatham's bisexual and lesbian populations, which make up a significant portion of the student body. Students also say there is a decent variety of students from various economic backgrounds, especially given the cost of tuition.

The Campus Is Very Intolerant

The campus is so small if you make one person mad at you, you lose all your connections to the community. People will turn their nose up at you even if they are mentally ill and have poor grades. Keep to yourself, don't make friends with anyone not interested in going to college for work

Diversity Is Not an Issue

Chatham is fairly diverse in most of these areas and I have not seen any lack of acceptance

Diversity Everywhere

The Chatham campus is the most diverse and accepting campus I have ever seen. No two people on campus are the same. Everyone is unique in their own way, yet each of us in connected in some way. Everyone on the campus is super friendly and I have learned about so many new things from the people. There are a lot of different cultures, countries, and ethnicity represented on the campus. I am surrounded by diversity and it is wonderful.

Facts

Gay Pride

Roughly half of Chatham's student population is gay or in a same-sex relationship, and the campus is highly tolerant of the GLBT community. Students Against Sexual Oppression (SASO) is an organization for the GLBT community and allies that raises awareness at events like "Take Back the Night." It also does fundraising for community GLBT organizations through events like "Marriage Booth." Overall, the sexual community at Chatham is diverse, ranging from straight to gay and everywhere in between.

Political Activity

Chatham's campus tends to lean strongly to the left. There is a vocal conservative minority, but it is largely overwhelmed by the liberal majority. While some students are apathetic about their political views, students tend to become very active in political causes, especially around election times. During primary and local elections, students often "chalk the quad," writing politically-themed messages in chalk along the pathways around Upper Campus.

Economic Status

There is a fair amount of economic diversity on Chatham's campus. Campus includes students from a fairly high socioeconomic status whose families can pay the $40,000 sticker price to students who are of a lower socioeconomic status and take advantage of Chatham's generous scholarship offerings. Most students, however, are lower- to upper-middle class, and there is very little segregation along the lines of economic difference.

Most Common Religions

The most common religions on campus are Christianity, Judaism, and Muslim. There are a few religious organizations on campus, such as the Muslim Student Association, Chabad, and the Interfaith Council, but the campus itself is nondenominational, so Chatham really strives to make school-sponsored events all-faith, such as the December candlelight ceremony. Every Thursday, there is an all-faith gathering that approaches religious issues from various religious traditions.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Minority clubs on campus include the Black Student Union and the Muslim Student Association. The Black Student Union holds various events on campus throughout the year geared toward increasing awareness and sometimes just having fun. BSU also participates in a mentoring program with local black high school students. The Muslim Student Association shows films about the Muslim world to increase awareness and also holds celebrations for the various Muslim holidays to which all of campus is invited.

Did You Know? Chatham University is is a secular college and, therefore, religiously nondenominational.
