Chatham University’s College for Women is precisely that—a women's college. The undergraduate school is all female, but male students can be seen on campus because the graduate programs are coed. Guys are visible in the Athletic & Fitness Center, the library, and in the dining hall. Therefore, the guy-to-girl ratio makes the dating scene at Chatham slightly different than what you’d find at other colleges. For students looking to make a coed connection, the most popular way is to head to one of the other local universities, like the University of Pittsburgh or Carnegie Mellon. While finding a heterosexual relationship at Chatham might take slightly more work, being in a city filled to the brim with college students makes the task a little easier. Some women at Chatham date other women, and being at a single-sex institution makes this a popular dating choice. However, the campus population is small, so drama can occur as a result.

A large portion of students are sexually promiscuous at Chatham, which can be evident when girls bring different guys into their dorm rooms on a weekly basis. Besides safety issues, especially if the girl does not know the guy too well, it is easy to turn a blind eye to such promiscuous behavior by shutting the door and playing music. Not all girls at Chatham exhibit such behavior, so if you do not want to be a part of this scene, just find friends with the same values as you!

Guys and Girls

It is a very diverse campus. There aren't many men, so I can't really speak to that, but the few I have met were very nice. The women are very unique though. As an all girls school there are many women that are gay or bi, but it isn't really a big deal and most people get along regardless of sexual orientation.

Social Scene

Chatham students tend to be fairly outgoing, most likely as a result of a very small campus and the fact that all students are women. Students form friendships with others in their residence halls and through athletic teams and organizations. Hookups often happen as a result of relationships formed through sports teams and by going out on weekends with other Chatham students. Most students are also involved on campus in at least one group or organization and stay involved throughout their four years at Chatham.

Hookups or Relationships?

The dating scene at Chatham is varied and depends on what the student is looking for. Many straight students maintain long-distance relationships with boyfriends from home or at other schools, but many meet guys in Pittsburgh and begin what are usually long-term relationships. For those looking for random hookups, frat parties are always available at other local schools. For gay or bisexual students on campus, random hookups are always an option, and some women seem to go through other women at a relatively rapid pace. Some students, however, do form lasting relationships, and the occasional relationship ends up lasting beyond the Chatham years.

Dress Code

Most students take advantage of the fact that Chatham is a women's college and do not dress up for class. Typical class clothes include jeans, T-shirts, and sweatpants. Some students dress nicely on a regular basis, but dressing up to attend class is by no means necessary. Since Chatham gives away free T-shirts quite often, it is common to see many students wearing the free T-shirts to class.

Did You Know? The Office of Student Affairs offers dancing lessons (salsa, tango, etc.) in which a local fraternity also attends to be the male dance partners. These events are a great way to meet college guys while learning some sweet dance moves at the same time!
