Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Pittsburgh has been ranked among America's most livable cities, and the affordable housing prices are a major contributor to this distinction. A two-bedroom apartment, usually with utilities included, will run about $850 per month, on average. Although some of the housing is outdated, the prices in Pittsburgh are very affordable. Chatham is located in the center of three neighborhoods—Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, and Oakland—that all have large college student populations, which also makes housing readily available. In order to get the best deal and the nicest apartment or townhouse, students might want to start looking for housing early, but, overall, housing in the area is plentiful.

Off-campus housing is fairly convenient. For students who live in Oakland, the Chatham University Green Machine shuttle can be used for transportation to campus. And since it passes through Oakland about every 15 minutes, this is a convenient option. Students who choose to live in Squirrel Hill or Shadyside, for the most part, will be close enough to campus to walk. Most students choose to live on campus their first three years at Chatham because of either convenience or parking issues, but many seniors and some underclassmen do choose to move to off-campus housing, and most don't regret the decision.

Lots of Options

To live off-campus, you have to rent your own apartment, but their are lots of areas close to campus that you could live in. Squirrel Hill and Shadyside are both pretty safe nice areas, and are close to school.

Woodland and Fickes Residence Halls

NOTE: I am only reviewing Woodland and Fickes because those are the only dorms I have lived in.

All dorms now feature free cable and ethernet. Getting things fixed in any dorm is a pain; it can take several weeks for things to get done, if they get done at all. When I lived in Woodland last year, I had a severe ant infestation that started in April and never got taken care of. The washers and dryers are often broken, leading to my friends and I occasionally doing our laundry off-campus.

NOTE: Chatham dorms receive a B+ because our campus is very beautiful, and our dorms are much better looking that some of those at other local schools

WOODLAND - Location is great, right next to Café Rachel and near most class buildings; renovated hospital, and often feels like it; can feel impersonal and lonely at times; male grad students live on the fourth floor; handicap-accessible

FICKES - Largest dorm on campus, houses about 150+; very beautiful renovated mansion with several common areas; features a few mini-apartments; only one washer and one dryer per floor, when there should be at least two, if not three to four washers and dryers per floor, given the large number of residents; no elevator
