Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Parking at Chatham, much like parking in the rest of Pittsburgh, is not readily available and tends to be expensive. Due to the nature of Chatham's campus, few parking spots are available. Students with parking passes can park in either the Upper Campus lots or the lots on Fifth Avenue (if they live in the campus apartments) at any time. For students without a parking pass, visitor parking is available in all Upper Campus lots from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. on weekdays and is open on weekends.

The bad news is if you park on campus without a permit, you are more than likely going to get saddled with a ticket, which can cost from $35 for a Chatham citation to around $60 for a state citation. The good news is that there is a decent amount of off-campus parking available. Shady Avenue, College Street, and Maryland Avenue are all within walking distance of campus and have free street parking. Students just have to be aware of when street cleaning is scheduled and move their vehicles on those days—or they might just end up with that ticket anyway.

Parking Is Always a Hassle

Parking on campus is prohibited unless you obtain a parking permit for a payment of a few hundred dollars per semester. Recently students living on campus were given parking permits also which made it very difficult for commuters to obtain parking spaces. Chatham would be much more efficient in their parking systems if there were additional lots added for commuter students.

Don't Plan on Using the Visitor Parking Spaces!

If you're visiting the campus, good luck finding a parking spot. Though parking places are extremely convenient in location, the price is awful! minimum of $200/semester when it only costs $20/year to get an off campus parking permit (or nothing at all depending on the neighborhood!). Most commuters take advantage of the 2 hour maximum placed on visitor spots and use those instead, causing lots of issues for visitors attempting to park on campus.

Chatham Parking

I personally would not know about the parking because I do not have a car or a license, but I would think that the parking is very good.

Getting a Parking Permit

Parking permits are issued to undergraduates, graduate students, and commuters. Parking permit applications are available online at my.chatham.edu (Chatham's intraweb), and the application is straightforward and easy to fill out. Public Safety notifies accepted applicants usually within a week or two, and passes can be picked up at the Student Accounts office in Braun Hall. Any issues with parking permits or tickets can be taken to Public Safety in Rea Garage.

Did You Know? Car break-ins do happen. Never leave any valuables visible in your vehicle: Bring all GPS units in with you, keep your CDs where they aren't visible, don't leave anything lying on your seats, and even tidy up the loose change in your cup holders. This will decrease the chances of your car looking interesting enough to break into.
