Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Whether students are looking to travel between local college campuses or throughout the city, transportation is readily available and inexpensive at Chatham. The University runs three Green Machine shuttles (named for the biodiesel fuel they run on) that transport students from Chatham's main Shadyside campus to Chatham Eastside, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Pittsburgh. Chatham shuttles have three pick-up spots: Howe-Childs Gate House, the intersection of Woodland Road and Chapel Hill, and in front of the Campbell Memorial Chapel. Students are enthusiastic about the shuttles, saying that the system is very convenient, very easy to use, and always available. Chatham also provides shuttle services on the weekends to various malls including Pittsburgh Mills and Robinson Mall, to name a couple, for students without vehicles who are looking to do some weekend shopping. Also, the shuttles provide service to local grocery stores like Giant Eagle and Whole Foods during the week, for students that need to pick up groceries.

Taxis are available in the city of Pittsburgh, but students generally only use them when going out somewhere they can't easily walk home from or to get to the airport, as the fares can get expensive, especially in Pittsburgh traffic. There are cab vouchers available in which the cab fare will be charged to the student's account. Many students make use of the PAT (Port Authority Transit) bus system, which is free with a Chatham student ID and runs throughout Pittsburgh and beyond city limits. Around major breaks, Chatham provides a shuttle service to and from the airport and the bus station for students looking to go home. This service is free, but students must schedule in advance.

Green Machines

The "Green Machines" on campus are wonderful. The drivers are really friendly and helpful. It always seems like there is a shuttle running. It's easy to get around and the fact that the shuttles are free is just wonderful.

Shuttles Are the Future

Chatham does a wonderful job with transportation for the most part. There are three 'Green Machine' shuttles that ferry students to Oakland and Eastside on a daily basis. One Friday nights, there is an option to go to the Waterfront plaza, and on every Saturday there is a shuttle that goes to a different mall every weekend. The drivers are exceptionally kind and truly do want to make sure no one is left behind and that everyone gets to where they need to be. On that note, they also offer a priority trip to Urgent Care should any student need medical attention that cannot be handled on campus.

Also, Chatham has arranged an agreement with Pitt University and Port Authority so that Chatham students may ride those buses for free!
