It is hard to describe the average student at City College of San Francisco because there simply isn't a single average type! There is a large group of high school graduates who are waiting to transfer to four-year colleges, but there is an equally large group of students who are in transition, either linguistically and culturally as new immigrants learning English, or professionally as people reconfiguring their career paths. Other types of students include retirees taking classes for enrichment and university graduates taking courses in preparation for their master's degree application. You can find people of every ethnicity, culture, and political leaning. The list is endless, and almost everyone at City College has a story.
A large number of students at City College are also underprivileged. There are full-time working students, single mothers, and students who have not been to school in more than 20 years. There is also a significant number of veterans at City College. In a city that boasts of its multicultural and liberal heritage, City College of San Francisco is a very interesting cross section, bringing people from diverse backgrounds together and giving them a common bond for intellectual, cultural, and interpersonal exchange.
