Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The local atmosphere at Claflin and in the surrounding environment of Orangeburg is quite tranquil and relaxing. The University has maintained most of its historic buildings, which adds a Southern charm to the atmosphere for its students and visitors alike. The natural environment on its own is quite peaceful, but the students and locals bring the small town of Orangeburg to life. The town is very appreciative that it is home to two major universities in South Carolina—Claflin and South Carolina State University—and the locals love to meet and interact with the variety of college students here.

However, since Orangeburg is so small—the population is less than 15,000—there is not much activity in the town itself, and many students prefer to head off to bigger cities like Charleston, Myrtle Beach, and Columbia where there are a variety of things for them to do. However, all students agree that Orangeburg is one of the best places to get away from the hustle and bustle of the real world. The town is calm, and there are no distractions to affect a student’s academic potential, which gives Claflin students a big advantage in their college careers.

The safety here on campus is pretty safe. I am mostly on campus because I have fun on campus. And I am not really sure about the locations in my area because I am not from this town.

Claflin is in the center of Orangeburg. It is a very pretty and clam atmosphere. There are plenty of places to go to eat but not so much to do. The campus is very small and it feels like a home away from home. I love where I am located at and I wouldn't change it for the world.
