Well Manicured Campus

The facilities at Claflin University are mediocre. The weight room is pretty small and the equipment is outdated. The student center has a lounge, game room, coffee shop and a pizza. The library is decent but it closes at midnight. Campus activities is centered around Greek life. The campus is very beautiful with a well manicured lawn.

Computers

The computers we have on campus are sometimes slow but still great and the printers do print well. On Finals and mid-terms week the computers are real crowded and some of the computers don't work and there are limited computers.

Too Strict

In terms of visitation policies, the University is too strict. Considering that many of us have left home in order to grow as young adults, I think that it is OUR responsibility to make the right decisions. Therefore, the freedom to welcome someone of the opposite sex into our living space without intentions of carrying out any inappropriate acts should be at our discretion. I think that the no visitation policy could be, at the least, modified in some way. I find it especially troublesome that no visitation (even in the lobbies) is allowed during exam time. Our library only stays open until midnight, and many students participate in afternoon/evening activities. Therefore, it is very difficult to obtain help from and study with students of the opposite sex (considering that I am in no classes that are all-female).

Lacking

There is a lack of variety when it comes to the nightlife in Orangeburg. Except for the clubs and house parties, there is little to nothing to do. Also, there is no campus shuttle service, so students who have no transportation of their own only have the option of riding with other people, which is fine in some cases, but overall is less convenient in my opinion.

Lacks an Assortment of Activities

For students who enjoy partying, they are probably at home in Orangeburg. However, I personally think that there should be other outlets for fun besides the regular "sweat-box" nightclubs. Coffee shops, jazz clubs, and a larger assortment of shopping venues would be a great addition to the city.

Permit Cost

It's only $25 for parking, but you're not guaranteed a spot on campus.

PROFESSORS

Overall, in the science department we need more professors and a variety. It's hard to understand the foreigners. The curriculum is compatible with any other university, and the workload is normal.

Diversity

This is a great school of diversity where everyone is welcome!

Russell Apts.

Claflin recently provided off-campus housing for upperclassman males. The building was known and is still known to be a hotel built years ago but is now used as a place for students to live. With students being satisfied, it's a great place to stay. Bathrooms and AC units along with TVs, microwaves, refrigerators, and other services are provided.

Computer Labs

The computer labs on campus are very useful when it comes to getting work done. There are computers available all over campus from the dorms to the student services room. The only issue with that is there tends to be problems with computers in the labs of certain dorms. I believe when they install these computers, they should make sure that the computers are running well and not just placing computers in there to have them. If you only place computers in there just to say you have them in there then it will cause problems because while some are there for browsing, others are needed for educational purposes.

Community Service

The school has every student do community service for their first three years. This provides us with hands-on experience in the real world.

Need for more transportation facilities

There is a single bus to take us to places such as Walmart or to our volunteer sites.

Best Place to Check Out

The place to check out is the Chinese restaurant called China Town. It has the best food around, and you get a lot of food for your money.

Good but Always Room for Improvement

I generally don't have too many problems with the food at the cafe. There have been a couple times though where my chicken or other meat was under-cooked. That was a bit of a problem. It looks like the food crew works hard to give us our meals every day, so I do respect that. However, when it comes to the delivery of the food, there is room for improvement

Overall Safety

Seeing how there is security at both the exit and entrance of the school, as well as always around campus, and they're easily accessible, I must say that I feel really safe on campus. It is not a big campus either, so the enclosed feature that it provides is comforting

Student Center

I think the student center has good intentions for providing extra space for students to study eat, and hang out as they please. However, due to the fact that Claflin does not have much more places like that, other than the library, which is only to study, and the cafe, which has time limits of when it opens and closes, I think the student center should be bigger and provide more themed activities for the students, other than just pool, TV, or paddle ball.

Alcohol Visibility

There is not a lot of alcohol supervision on Claflin University. If people are drinking, they will not get caught unless someone reports them to security.

Freshman Dorms

The freshman dorms at Claflin University are not very inviting, especially if the school wants freshmen to eventually stay on campus all four years. I would choose a newer building—they do cost more, but it's worth it.

No Pep in Students

The only way you will see school spirit on any day is when we play against our rival, it's homecoming, and/or Pantherfest.

Attire

The men and women at Claflin University are held to a very high standard.

Orangeburg

At Claflin University, the atmosphere is great, but off campus, no one goes anywhere alone because it is simply unsafe.

Great School

I absolutely love this place—it's very friendly, and they put an emphasis on academics, which most schools sometimes forget about.

Keep the Campus Safe

The public safety at the university is very strict.

Self Transportation

I have my own car, so transportation is not a problem, but the school does not provide it.

Marketing World

I like being a business marketing major at school. The program has really shaped me into the businessperson I want to be.
