Best Ways to Get to the Airport
  • At the end of each semester or before a school break, the Office of Student Support Services provides a shuttle to the Columbia and Charleston airports. The shuttle does drop offs and pick ups on designated days. There is a fee for this, which is usually announced a week in advance.
  • While your own personal car can solve all your worries, sharing a ride in a friend's car will do the trick, as well. It's a cheap way to get to the airport.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Transportation on campus is not an issue—Claflin is a walking campus where students can reach wherever they need to be on campus in less than 10 minutes. But when it comes to getting around off campus, transportation is at an all-time low. Most students without a car usually have friends who are willing to take them around town, but the added annoyance of always having to ask someone to drive you somewhere can soon build up. The school currently has one bus that will shuttle students by appointment only, but the buses only really go to community-service destinations or occasionally to Wal-Mart. Plus, the University has only two bus drivers, so it can be an inconvenience when there is no one to drive the bus. Fortunately, there are nearby convenience stores and fast food restaurants that are in walking distance from the school, so most students have access to these places without the need for a car.

In terms of long-distance traveling, there is a Greyhound bus station in the vicinity that can take students out of the town during breaks if they live farther away. The school bus also shuttles students to the Amtrak train station and to the Columbia and Charleston airports for a reasonable fee. Being such a small, isolated campus, the school doesn’t really have a need for a more extravagant shuttle system. This can really put some students at a disadvantage, so the best thing to do is to find a friend with a car!

The man who takes us places drives wild and is usually swerving. But he gets us there safely and we have to pay for them to take us the airport, train, and bus stations.
