Comparable Schools' Diversity Grades:
College Prowler Take
Claremont’s minority enrollment statistics don’t lie: Claremont does not rank above average on ethnic diversity. However, its financial aid stats don’t lie either—CMCers come from many different socioeconomic backgrounds. Claremont students are smart, with the ability to argue and debate while still respecting another person’s point of view, which gives everyone the freedom to be different. Of all diversity issues, CMCers are probably most uncomfortable with sexual orientation. While there isn’t any hostility towards gay or lesbian students, it is definitely the hottest diversity issue on campus. In the spring of 2004, there was one major incident in which a professor’s car was vandalized with hate slang and bashed in, but it turned out that the (now former) professor had done it to her own car, because she thought students at the Five Colleges were too complacent. The students proved her wrong, however, when over 4,000 students came out to a day-long rally protesting hate crimes and supporting the professor. Claremont students care about tolerance, but because people so rarely disrespect others, it isn’t an everyday issue. Because Claremont students come from all over the country and all over the world, and from many different backgrounds, Claremont McKenna is a school where people learn about other people and other ways of life and new ideas. You would be hard-pressed to find a student here who isn’t friends with someone who has vastly different beliefs.

Honestly, CMC is pretty white...
Honestly, CMC is pretty white washed with fiscally conservative, upper-middle class, athletic econ-gov majors. We're probably a much more conservative campus than most liberal arts schools and a lot more professionally minded. Other than that, there's not too much diversity, except in religion, which is a very open topic. But the 5Cs are a completely different story. Each school is so different that there's some of everything if you combine all the schools.

I feel like there is a good deal of economic diversity, but there are not so many students coming from truly poor backgrounds. Most students are white Americans, but there is a good deal of ethnic diversity. CMC is supposedly the most conservative of the 5Cs, but there are plenty of liberals. It's a healthy mix of people from the right and left to have excellent debates. There is a pretty large community of gay people across the five Cs, but I'm not sure how many of them are from CMC specifically.

The school feels like it is not diverse at all, but it is possible to make a diverse group of friends if you are not married to one social scene.

One downside here is the lack of diversity. Most people are well off, politically active (although partisanship varies), straight, white, and athletic.

FactsEconomic Status
Because CMC gives such generous financial aid, students come from all different walks of life and no one gives economic background a second thought. The school subsidizes the cost of many activities, which allows everyone in the student body to participate.
Gay Pride
Claremont's student body is relatively laid-back, but sexual orientation makes more CMC students uncomfortable than any other diversity issue. That being said, there is a significant gay population at the five colleges, and being openly gay at CMC isn't an issue, although some individuals admit to feeling uncomfortable. There is a large and well supported Straight But Not Narrow group at Claremont and a Queer Resource Center available to all Consortium students.
Minority Clubs
Asian Students Club, Black Student Union, Empowered Black Women, Empowered Latinos/as in Action, Hillel, Jewish Student Union, Muslim Students Association, Office of Black Student Affairs, Pan-African Student Association, Queer Questioning Allied Mentoring Program, Queer Resource Center, Straight But Not Narrow, Taiwanese Student Union, TRANScend, Women’s Forum
Most Common Religions
Christianity is the dominant religion at Claremont and is an active community, but there is also a high percentage of Jewish students, and there aren’t any religious tolerance issues. InterVarsity, the Christian organization on campus is the largest organization in the Consortium.
Political Activity
Claremont is a unique place; the student body is split almost equally along the political spectrum, which makes for some very good debates. A lot of students are politically active, a vast majority of students are passionate about some issue, and everyone is well informed.
