Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Claremont isn’t winning any diversity awards yet, but it is heading in the right direction. While upper-middle class white kids are dominant on campus, every year there is more ethnic diversity. CMC does have impressive economic diversity now thanks to some very generous financial aid packages. Fortunately, once kids are here, no one really cares what kind of lifestyle students are accustomed to, although it does sometimes create awkward conversation.

CMC students come from all over the country, though California and the Pacific Northwest are particularly well represented. Most international students are from Asia, but there are a fair number from other places, as well. For a liberal arts school, there is political diversity, which is surprising. CMC is unique in the fact that more students are politically and economically conservative than liberal. Political views definitely bring about the most heated debates on campus, with most students being very firm in their viewpoints.

Religion isn't a big issue for most students at CMC. Christianity and Judaisim are the two most represented religions, but most students are open-minded and don't take their religion too seriously.

Sexual diversity is probably the most underrepresented diversity on CMC’s campus. There are definitely some people here uncomfortable with gays and bisexuals. CMC is working on creating awareness and alliances, but this is the biggest diversity issue on campus.

Feels Like Summer Camp

This place is the best place on planet Earth. The people are so friendly, the academics are very hard but worth it, and the party scene and hookup scene is crazy. It's the definition of work hard, play hard. Feels like summer camp except with homework and tests.

Not Bad but...

Diversity is good in the sense that there isn't a lot of racial segregation and we have a lot of certain minority groups. Hardly ANY African Americans though.

Actual (Not Just Statistical) Diversity

Although CMC might not have the diversity, on paper, of some other schools, the actual levels of diversity here are pretty high. People from all sorts of backgrounds (racial, geographic, religious) and with incredibly varying political beliefs and orientations interact seamlessly on campus; people don't tend to self-segregate here. Also, the political diversity is AMAZING and really contributes to the political activism and discourse of the student body.

Facts

Gay Pride

Claremont's student body is relatively laid back, but sexual orientation makes some CMC students more uncomfortable than any other diversity issue. That being said, there is a significant gay population at the five colleges, and being openly gay at CMC isn't an issue. There is a large and well-supported Straight But Not Narrow group at Claremont and a Queer Resource Center available to all consortium students.

Political Activity

Claremont is a unique place; the student body is split almost equally along the political spectrum, which makes for some very good debates. A lot of students are politically active, with a vast majority of students passionate about some issue—everyone is well informed.

Economic Status

Because CMC gives such generous financial aid, students come from all different walks of life, and no one gives economic background a second thought. The school subsidizes the cost of many activities, which allows everyone in the student body to participate.

Most Common Religions

Christianity is the dominant religion at Claremont and is an active community, but there is also a high percentage of Jewish students, and there aren’t any religious tolerance issues. InterVarsity, the Christian organization on campus, is the largest organization in the Consortium.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Asian Students Club, Black Student Union, Empowered Black Women, Empowered Latinos/as in Action, Hillel, Jewish Student Union, Muslim Students Association, Office of Black Student Affairs, Pan-African Student Association, Queer Questioning Allied Mentoring Program, Queer Resource Center, Straight But Not Narrow, Taiwanese Student Union, TRANScend, Women’s Forum
