Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

CMC has one of the most relaxed substance policies of any school in the 5Cs. Literally, no one gets in trouble for drinking—even if they are underage. Students party in their dorms and outside, in plain sight of campus security, without any worries. There are only two basic policies for drinking at CMC—"the red cup" policy, and know your limits. "Red cup" policy states that anyone can drink a beverage in a red cup, and authority figures won't ask what's in the cup. That said, after several hospitalizations and much talk of redoing the relaxed alcohol policy, the unwritten policy is merely know your limits—if you don't pass out/need your stomach pumped, it's fine. Alcohol is readily available at dorm parties and bigger parties, and it's usually paid for by student government. Most students are accustomed to drinking for free.

The marijuana policy is tricky at CMC—as it is all over California. Some students even have their own medical marijuana cards. Smoking is done inside and outside of dorms, in a relatively discreet fashion. Marijuana is as hard a drug as most students get, and anyone who does anything else does't talk about it. CMCers like to let loose and unwind with various substances, and, for the most part, the administration is OK with it.

Most Relaxed Policies of Anywhere

You can get away with pretty much everything. Campus security doesn't care if you have alcohol, some people have carried fifths across campus and no one cares. The "red cup policy" is good to take into consideration though. Just don't drink on dry week (the first week of each year) or they'll get you in huge trouble.

A Lot of Pretentiousness on the School's Part

They try and punish kids when they get too drunk and get alcohol poisoning (which is legal if you are of age, just stupid) but they ignore kids that do drugs because it looks bad on them if they recognize there is a drug problem, which there is. Lots of weed, some cocaine underground, and ecstacy is gaining ground at Scripps College. If you wish to avoid it, there is no pressure whatsover. Walk away.

Very Liberal Drinking Policy, Easy-Going Flow of Drugs

Policy on drinking is very lax. It's nice when the administration, security, and the student body don't waste time fighting over alcohol, although recently, tensions have grown between the student body and administration. Still, beer pong happens out in the open. There are a few day-time drinking parties (to name a few: 6:01, Pirate Party, Senior Fountain Day). Similar to other small colleges, it seems there are a few freshman every year who get alcohol poisoning. They are looked down on. CMC prides itself on knowing how to handle its drink. People will not ostracize you if you don't drink, but many people who don't drink don't enjoy the party scene. Since the party scene is a large part of CMC's culture, memory-making, and fun, non-drinkers may feel like outsiders at CMC. Drug culture is less main-stream at CMC, but there are quite a few who have tried "soft" drugs, and if you search hard, you can find friends who enjoy doing harder drugs together. Smokers smoke together but do it discreetly where it rarely bothers students passing by. There is not enough culture around any drug to give a "peer pressure" vibe, though it is a rare student who leaves CMC without having tried drinking at least once.
