Advice

  • CMC’s Career Services Center is available to students looking for post graduate work, summer internships, or just general career advice. Most students would agree that the office is best at helping econ and accounting majors find jobs, but that’s partly due to the strong recruitment programs in place at most investment banks, consulting firms, and accounting firms. Over 100 firms visit CMC to recruit, including Teach For America, advertising and entertainment agencies, and political organizations. Around a quarter of every graduating class goes directly to graduate school—mostly law school—so the Career Service Center also provides support for grad school applications. Firms also come to campus to recruit for summer internships, although the process is less organized. The Center can connect students with alumni in the field and location they wish to work. CMC’s alumni network is very supportive, and this can be a great way to find a job. Many students aren’t completely satisfied with the Career Services Center and find they have to do a lot of work on their own, but the Center does offer a helpful variety of support services. Some further points to remember: • Go into the Career Services Center a little earlier in your college life than you think you might need to. Talking to the counselors can make everything seem a little less confusing. • Go to on-campus events with Alumni and Ath talks that interest you and use the opportunity to network. • Pay attention to your Informs for internship opportunities. • The Kravis Leadership Institute gives grants to students who work unpaid internships at not-for-profit organizations both domestically and internationally. • The Mentor Café, the alumni mentorship program, can be a great way to talk to someone who can help you figure out what types of careers might suit you and help you figure out how to get the job you want.
