College Prowler Take

Suburban Los Angeles provides a huge variety of great places to eat on a college budget, from everyday burrito and sushi places to upscale places to go with your family on parents weekend. The Village is closest to campus, but is the least budget-friendly area around. On the cheaper end, there is Heroes, a great sports bar with huge portions and giant beers, and a good pizza place. There are a few good but pricey sandwich places for lunch. When the parental units come to town, take them to Viva Madrid, a great Tapas bar, Walter’s, an Afghani place, or either of the two upscale Italian places. Near campus in other directions just about every culture is represented, from Mongolian barbeque to Middle Eastern. Mexican, Chinese, and Japanese are particularly well represented. There is a sushi place on nearly every block. Fast food is also well represented, with every major brand within a few miles, including the much-worshipped In-N-Out.

The Claremont Colleges are just a small blip on the radar screen of the San Bernadino, so not many places do college-oriented specials, but there are some great happy hour food and drink specials around for students willing to poke their nose around a bit. Casa de Salsa’s dollar taco, two-dollar margarita Mondays are one example. In summary, it’s not hard to eat on a budget, just go to Heroes for giant beers, only order pizza from Roundtable if you absolutely have to, and avoid the Hot Dog Pad Thai at Mix Bowl.

There are good restaurants in the Village, but they are pricey and most people don't take advantage of them. There is not a great bar scene.

Off-campus restaurants are fun to go to once in a while. There are lots of different options for cuisine and prices. Sports bars are good places to hang out and grab a bite to eat.

The restaurants are okay—nothing amazing but still pretty good. Kinya is fun for sake bombs. The Village is definitely walkable.

There are decent Japanese, Chinese, Mexican, and Italian food nearby. None are really within convenient walking distance. I enjoy Heroes and Tutti Mangia, two restaurants in the village.
