Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Off-campus housing is not a popular option at Claremont. Housing is assured for all four years, and few people pass up the chance to live in the middle of everything. For those who do choose to live off campus, there is little help. Sometimes names of good apartment complexes are handed down from class to class, but there is no such thing as a "student area" off campus—only a few random apartments scattered here and there.

Most of the areas around campus are safe to live in, and affordable housing can be found just a few minutes from school. Living in an apartment off of the meal plan is almost surely a savings if you don't factor in car-related costs that are required for the drive to school. It's not that students can't live off campus; it's just simply that they don't. There are one or two groups of friends who move out every year, but they become very separated from all of the activities that go on at school.

The dorms are comfortable, and the food is good, so there is no desperate need to get out, and come senior year, most students have the option of moving out to the Student Apartment Complex, which provides all the joys of living off campus while still staying within the Claremont McKenna bubble.

College Park- Do Not Live Here

I live in an apartment complex which is a 3 min drive from CMC, this place is horrible! Apart from the two higher ranking people who work here and the gardeners, the other leasing office people are mean and vindictive. They are NOT friendly to college kids as much as they like to say they are, they put you next to real people- families, cops, old people hoping that they will keep you under control. I don't do drugs but there are 3 different cops living close to me, it's just not nice to know. It will make so much more sense to have a corner for college kids because now, EVERYONE is unhappy! This place is also really expensive and unsafe. MY CAR GOT BROKEN INTO RIGHT OUTSIDE OF MY APT BUILDING!

Unnecessary

On-campus housing is really nice, affordable, and convenient, so the vast majority of people live in the dorms or senior apartments. Of those who live elsewhere, there's a pretty nice apartment complex within walking distance, so the off-campus option is available.

Students can live off campus in a number of ways, though most don't opt to until their junior/senior years. There are many options available, but most people choose to stay on campus.
