Best Ways to Get Around Town

  • Comfy flip-flops (rainbows are worth the price)

How to Get to the Airport

  • Distances in the Inland Empire are generally far, and cabs are prohibitively expensive, however SuperShuttle can be a good way to get to the airport; call (909) 467-9600. A shuttle ride costs $19 to Ontario International, $55 to Long Beach International, and $51 to Los Angeles International.

College Prowler Take

Getting around Claremont McKenna’s campus is easy, since it is only a 15-minute walk between the furthest points. Most people walk, and a lot of students skateboard. Bikes are common, too, although the short distances almost make them unnecessary. CMC is centrally located within the 5Cs, which means you are never more than 15 minutes from any point on any other campus. There is no shuttle to get around campus—it’s not needed, and the campuses are limited almost entirely to foot traffic anyway. Getting around the local area is a little bit trickier without a car. There is some mass transit, but it isn’t used much by students, and it can be difficult to figure out. To get into downtown LA, the Metrolink commuter train is pretty easy. Foothill Transit buses can be caught on Foothill Boulevard on the northern boarder of Harvey Mudd and can be used to get around the local area in Claremont, Upland, and Montclair.

Getting to Claremont McKenna isn’t hard, since suburban LA is served by a number of airports. Given a choice, always choose Ontario International Airport, since it is easiest and most traffic-free. Long Beach International is okay, but it is small, and flights can be hard to find. As attractive and obvious as it may seem, avoid LAX at all costs. The traffic between Claremont and LAX is completely unpredictable but almost always horrible. Claremont isn’t served by Greyhound or Amtrak, and it is probably more stress than it is worth to figure out how to take the bus or train.

There is a train going in and out of LA. Once you get to LA, the public transportation sucks there, too.

You really can't blame the Claremont Colleges for the pathetic public transportation system that exists in Los Angeles. You can take the MetroLink rail system downtown, but this is an unattractive option as service ends at midnight.

I don't think we have public transportation. I know that the 5Cs have Zipcars, but if you don't have your own car, you can get stuck on campus.
