College Prowler Take

The Clark Atlanta University administration recently decided that requiring students who have 58 credit hours or less to live on campus would yield positive benefits such as higher GPAs, higher retention, higher graduation rates, and a higher likelihood of attending a graduate or professional school among students. Even though this rule guarantees that during your sophomore year you will be confined to on-campus housing, there are still good things to look forward to come junior year. Clark Atlanta students that decide to move off campus get to experience “true adulthood” by learning to budget and spend efficiently in a high-priced city.

Apartment complexes located near the school are considered decent apartments because they are reasonably inexpensive, most include washer and dryer sets, and they also offer amenities such as swimming pools and weight rooms. Moving toward the outskirts of Atlanta are great options for students who have reliable transportation. Many Clark Atlanta students that choose to live places that are about 20 to 30 minutes away from campus do so for a good reason. Some of the areas located just outside metro-Atlanta are shockingly cheap and surprisingly beautiful. Some students that venture off campus have rented duplexes and homes that are located just a few blocks away from the main campus.

I absolutely love being off campus because it gives you a true ‘adulthood’ experience. When you stay off campus, you are forced to become more responsible because rent and utility bills are due every month, and the companies don’t really care if you absolutely had to have that new pair of boots. I would advise people who choose to live off campus to pick their roommate wisely because you never know a person until you live with them.

Students are allowed to move off...

Students are allowed to move off campus after obtaining 58 credit hours. There are plenty of apartments near campus, but they are more expensive than those three or four miles up the street. Most students who live off campus prefer the luxury of an affordable, yet quality apartment, so it’s pretty popular for students to move to Cobb County.

It doesn’t really matter whether you live on or off campus. Both have advantages and disadvantages. Some students try and move off campus to show that they are independent, which makes sense because even the upperclassmen apartments have RAs. Overall, living off campus kind of helps you to grow up since you have to sort out and pay your own bills.

I live off campus, but it is not exactly the bachelor pad you would imagine it to be. I rented out a duplex downtown with my friends during my junior year, but the place soon after became roach infested. According to my friends, Cobb County is the cheapest and the best place to stay in Atlanta.

Off campus is exciting because you get to meet new people and get to have parties every week if you choose. It’s like being at home by yourself when your parents are gone on a long vacation.
