College Prowler Take
Atlanta’s crime rate has declined tremendously over the past few years, but that is definitely not a reason to come to Atlanta with a suburban-life mentality. Although the campus police are stationed 24-hours a day at the main entrance and exit, it is still surprisingly easy for anyone that appears to be halfway decent to gain access to the main campus. When students decide to attend Clark Atlanta University, they quickly learn where to go, when to go, how to go, who to go with, and what to do when they arrive. The AUC shuttle bus is the safest and most convenient way to get to the local MARTA station, fast food restaurants, or stores to pick up goods. Whether it is day or night, Clark Atlanta students are advised not to venture off-campus without the companionship of a friend.
In most areas outside the campus, students must exhibit caution and use common sense to avoid everything that may cause trouble. One of the main tips that RAs give to new students is to lock their rooms so that valuable items have little to no chance of getting stolen or “borrowed.” The resident administration has helped to ensure safety by setting up scanners at the front door of all dormitories, allowing only residents to gain entrance. It’s not unlikely to see a little friendly competition or rivalry between freshman dorms and other colleges in the AUC. Although the surrounding areas may appear to be slightly dangerous, Clark Atlanta provides a safe environment for students who utilize common sense.

Like most college campuses, the police have the blue-light call-boxes that are scattered around campus. (I question if anyone has actually used them.) Clark also has escort services so that you don’t have to walk around feeling scared. The area surrounding the campus does not have many street lights, so I wouldn’t suggest walking by yourself. |

Even though Clark Atlanta is located in the heart of the city, it’s still a decent place to go to school. I have found that most of the people who live in the surrounding area are very nice people who tend to their own business. Bottom line: As long as you treat others with respect, they will (for the most part) treat you with respect. |

Clark Atlanta Police need some improvement, mostly on their social skills. Many of them lack the ability to speak and respect students as adults rather than targets to ticket and boot cars. Most of the gates around campus are usually locked at the appropriate time, and all of the dorms require card access. There is really no serious crime in the area, unless you consider students illegally parking a felony. |

I feel secure to walk where I like because the surrounding area is really not that bad compared to Northern ghettoes. I don’t rely on the police or campus security to protect me because they’re fishy. |

We’re probably not as safe as schools like Emory or Georgia Tech, but we don’t have much to worry about because the campus police are always on 24-hour duty. The campus has emergency phones and the AUC shuttle bus service. My parents were a little concerned at first, but they finally realized that crime happens anywhere and everywhere. |

A local Atlanta newspaper recently reported that residents are far more concerned about the traffic than the city’s crime rate.
Under the leadership of Mayor Shirley Franklin, Atlanta’s crime rate has significantly declined, and Atlanta is no longer considered one of the countries most dangerous cities.
