College Prowler Take
Although Atlanta’s public transportation makes inner-city travel pretty easy, most students that come from larger cities agree that the MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) system could stand for some huge improvements. The MARTA transit system is convenient for college students who need rides to places like the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, the major shopping malls, the downtown area, or any other place that is in the Central Atlanta region. The major complaints about the MARTA system are that it doesn’t cover enough places, deprived people are always begging for money, and the accessibility is not up to public transportation standards. Atlanta’s highways can be a nightmare because of the extreme rush-hour traffic. The city of Atlanta doesn’t seem to be making any efforts to subside these transportation issues, but luckily, freshman students don’t have many places to venture. The escort buses run from early in the morning to late at night and accommodate only students with proper AUC identification. Freshman students are prohibited from bringing cars, but that rule is hardly ever enforced. When freshman students decide to disregard the school’s no-car policy, the only thing that they truly have to worry about is obtaining a parking permit (which can be pretty easy to obtain). Atlanta can be a very confusing city, so if students choose to bring automobiles, they are advised by local officials to drive safely.

There is a man who rides the MARTA that you should avoid. He has three bottle caps, an eraser, and a piece of cardboard. Don’t fall into his hustle. His main phrase is, ‘Your college, my knowledge. Your eyes, my prize.’ He tries to hustle you out of your money by playing slick bottle cap games. And when that doesn’t work, he is going to pull out a deck of cards. |

It’s unreliable and unsafe for young women on the train and the bus. There are passengers on the train who do not have other passengers’ best interests at heart. I would not suggest that you catch the train or bus at night by yourself. There are usually a few crazy people in the MARTA station at night. |

The AUC shuttle is terrible. What kind of shuttle service only has about two stops. The drivers don’t like for students to ride with luggage, and they take all day to pick you up. Cab service is far too expensive for poor college students. |

The MARTA is okay. Overall, you...
The MARTA is okay. Overall, you get what you pay for. It’s not promising you a luxurious ride with first-class service. It goes to popular places around the city, and gets you there on time if you leave the house early enough. The MARTA has peak hours when it can be kind of hectic to find a seat. Besides that, I would have to say it’s a great alternative to walking. |

The public transportation system...
The public transportation system in the city is average. As for the MARTA, there are stations that are safer than others, but it will always get you where you need to go. There are stations at some of Atlanta’s best touring spots, such as Phipps Arena and the Georgia Dome. Also, it has convenient hours and is highly accessible to students who need to get to the airport for flights home. |
