Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

At Clark, sports seem to exist in another world. Clarkies are peripherally aware of them, they know that games and practices must take place, but in their hearts, they really don’t seem to care. There is no huge football team to rally behind, and the basketball and baseball games are usually attended by people involved in some other sport at Clark. The lack of enthusiasm for the sports teams has nothing to do with their records—most Clarkies are totally unaware of each team's records. But to the people who are play sports, the team seems to encompass their entire life. They wake up early to practice together, eat together, take many of the same classes, then practice again, eat again, and in many cases, room together, as well. This leads many people to say that athletic Clarkies take their sport far too seriously in relation to the rest of the student body. If you dream of widespread popularity, fans, and praise for your athletic accomplishments, do not come to Clark.

For the less serious, yet still athletic, there are intramurals. To many Clarkies, it seems that IMs are the real sports action on campus since those competitions are the ones you are most likely to talk about with your friends or overhear people discussing in the UC. Clarkies love their IM seasons and look forward to them every year, sometimes with sinister and dramatic plans in place to assemble the perfect team and score an undefeated record. It never gets too serious, though, and that’s how Clarkies like it, since academics or relaxation are easily the top priorities for most students.

Clark Isn't All About Sports

I've gone to a number of varsity as well as intramural or club sports games this year, and I enjoy the atmosphere. The people who do go to games have a lot of fun and get excited. Both athletic facilities are accommodating to athletes and non-athletes alike, I never feel judged for not being the fastest for strongest one in the gym. Also, the fact that sports teams are not exclusive or clique-y is something I feel is fairly unique to Clark. There could definitely be more school spirit here, but I think because the school attracts such a diverse student body, there are kids who care much more about other events or activites on campus.

Clark University Athletics

Students are very involved in athletics at Clark, and there is alot of school spirit. However the team is not the best, and it is one of the lower sports divisions. The gym and fields are extremely well taken care of and up to date.

Athletics...Wow.

The athletics at Clark are really good, but nobody ever really goes to the games unless one of our friends is on the team. We are not the greatest, but everybody is really proud of what they do. We have minimal school spirit for teams, but we do support them. I really like our swim team, but I hate the lacrosse team because all the laxbros are kind of stuck up. We have almost every sport except for football, but nobody really cares because we like our school anyways.

Most Popular Sports

“Popular” is a too strong a word to use when referencing sports at Clark. Baseball and basketball are mentioned commonly in passing, but no one ever seems know their season record. Most people get more excited about the IM sports, particularly volleyball. However, IMs are similar to varsity in that they also do not garner any support outside of the players themselves.

Most Overlooked Teams

The sports teams at Clark are all overlooked. However, the crew team probably has the worst hard-work-to-recognition ratio of them all. Many people don’t even know that Clark has a crew team. Next in line would be all the female teams. Baseball and men’s basketball get little, if any, attention from the student body, but the female teams are paid even less attention.

School Spirit

Clarkies may not look all that spirited on the surface, but deep down, they know that it means something special to be a Clarkie. It might not be obvious due to the unending complaints about the school’s latest construction project, the total lack of support for the sports teams, and the apathy with which students view the events that take place outside of their own cliques, but in the end, the feeling of being a member of the Clark community is really what keeps us tied to it in the first place. Clarkies recognize other Clarkies as friends when meeting for the first time. After graduation, fellow Clark students who never met before build new relationships around that common bond. Clark has a significant percentage of students who end up marrying other Clarkies. These are just a few examples of how strong an association is formed between the individual and the school.

Getting Tickets

Clark sporting events are free to attend.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Elm Park

Did You Know? Both Dolan Field House and Granger Field are examples of Clark's strive toward expanding and renewing their facilities. Unfortunately, most of the student body does not care enough about the school's athletic endeavors to feel that their construction was warranted. They remain mostly unused by the average student.
