College Prowler Take

Due to robberies around the area, the Worcester Police Department has dedicated a 14-person task force to the Clark area. But despite its poor location, Clark maintains an open campus, which means no fences, no security desks in dorms, and no parking garage attendant. Clark does have a swipe card system, on-foot and vehicle patrols, and closed-circuit cameras in the parking garage, and these small measures seem to keep the campus population feeling safe. Crime does take place on campus, but it is mainly vandalism and thefts that can be more logically attributed to Clarkies themselves instead of any outside threat. Walking to and from parties or really late at night is usually done in groups without much issue or complaint. The general feeling of students is that the campus itself is very safe, while the immediate area is only slightly dangerous and can be easily navigated with few precautions. For those who decide they would like some extra protection, emergency call-boxes line all the campus paths, and the escort van will drive you anywhere you want within a quarter mile.

As for the dorm security and police presence, students do not consider the campus police to be excessively apparent. However, they aren’t considered invisible enough to escape student gripes. Campus police should be looked out for whenever you are attempting something you probably shouldn't be doing. On the other hand, they never seem to be around when vandals are smashing vending machines and stealing the contents, which seems to happen at least once a month.

As of late, a rash of muggings and attempted robberies have occurred on campus and on the periphery of campus. Students are generally very nervous about roaming the grounds late and after hours. To reduce anxiety and prevent further property crimes, the campus has an escort that can accompany students to their residences and sites with a half-mile of campus. Though the escort is handy, the campus community is generally leery about the attempted robberies that continue to occur.

We have no safety measures except...

We have no safety measures except these lousy call boxes, which are useless. Campus is very small, and there are muggings once in a while. It's a touchy subject for me, and I feel that Clark should lock up the campus or get security cameras. One student council member is trying to get cameras. I don't feel safe at night on campus, so I'm armed. I don't travel alone, and I don't let my friends go out alone either.

Clark University has conveniently placed buttons around campus that allow you to contact the campus police right away. Since Clark's gates are open to the public, it is always a little scary to be out at night because Worcester's reputation is not exactly the safest. Still, the campus police is very aware of that and do everything they can to ensure students' safety.
